Help Newbie - How do I stop or limit Facebook notifications?

I'm brand new at using a smart phone but have 20+ years at using the Internet. I got a LG Volt (LS740) on Monday. I'm not sure how to add or manage apps but I somehow got into my Facebook account yesterday with it. But now my phone buzzes every 5 minutes telling me of some useless-to-me Facebook post. How do I stop or manage to minimize these notifications to what's important to me?

In addition, I'm not sure what to do with this thing, but know it can do alot. Somehow I was able with my Volt to get into my Google calendar that I used on my laptop, and both seem to sync with each other, so this is good. I just don't want to screw anything up, share my personal Google calendar, or sacrifice any security. Is there some website or better yet a video I can see to help Android newbies?

In the Facebook app, hit the 3 horizontal lines icon at the top right and scroll down to "app settings" then "notifications". There you can set what you get notified of.

For any other help, feel free to ask here.
No need to worry about anyone else seeing your calendar info unless you share your password.
Google services are pretty secure

Thanks. Wall posts mean posts on my personal wall? Both original posts as well as replies to posts on my wall? What are comments?
 
You're asking the wrong guy mate. I virtually abandoned Facebook when I discovered g+ and I think a lot has changed that I don't understand lol
 
Thanks everyone. I just chose to be notified for wall posts, messages, and photo tags. This greatly reduced the notices. I guess if I have any more questions, just open a new topic in a post?
