Root newbie needs help

R-R-Rx7

Lurker
Hello guys

Im not that phone/android oriented when it comes to installation etc so i am asking some guidance to upgrade my 5.7 serendipity into something better that will increase my battery life and upgrade the performance overall. 5.7 keeps freezing quite often lately
A friend of mine did everything in the past , rooting, serendipity 5.7 installation etc so i dont know where to start
Phone is the AT&t i897 Captivate

how do i install a serendipity 6.4? or even 7? my 5.7 drains my battery like crazy. 2 batteries a day are not enough (yes im carrying a second one:P)

If i copy my apps to SD, is the user data on the app copied aswell?

Non hateful comments are also greatly appreciated
Thanks

Serendipity may be nice and everything, but I am guessing that upgrading to a Gingerbread ROM will not get you better battery life. I upgraded to Gingerbread (2.3.x) for the features and the speed. If you want battery life and stability, you may want to stick with Froyo (2.2) and try Paragon RC6. Since I started flashing custom ROMs, I have used Paragon the longest because it is very reliable and has great battery life.

I am running Gingerbread and after 5 different ROMs, I am still trying to find the best ROM, Kernel, Modem combination.

Thank you for your answers guys

im not looking for the ultimate performance in battery as long as it can go at least 12 hours. Im not using it heavily either.
When im abroad and i dont use 3G i get almost 2 days with just one battery.

WHen you guys say that battery life is not that great with serendipity, how often does it need charging ? under what circumstances? Do you play angry bird from day to night? :D
