Help Newbie on Android (One X)

tripleX

Newbie
Hello guys, I'm new on the forum. I just bought HTC One X like 2 days ago and this is my first smartphone ever. I was old school guy, was using couple of Nokia devices but then I decided to go on with the technology :-D

Since I'm new here I have couple of questions about One X. First, What case would you recommend to me? I bought classic cheap rubber/silicon 5$ case until I figure out which case to buy to minimize potential damage on the device? I've heard about OtterBox cases but how much do they weigh, they seem very protective, but if the phone weighs 300 grams with them isn't it kinda stupid?

Second, do you recommend this sticky screen protectors? My brother is using EVO3D and he had a problems with some bubbles on the screen so he was frustrated that he didn't want to use screen protectors at all.

Are there any quick tips about battery life, can I make it last longer? This morning at 7:30 am battery was 100%, and after couple of SMSs, 15-20 minutes of talk time during the day and around 2-3 hours on WiFi at 19:00 battery was like 20%.

I am from Bosnia&Herzegovina, so sorry for my English, it's not perfect. :-)

Thanking you in advance :-)

Welcome to AF tripleX! :)

I'm using the Case Mate Emerge, it's relatively thin and lightweight, but it offers a good deal of protection. I would recommend a case as even the slightest bump can damage the phone (see here).

I'd probably recommend a screen protector, but I know a lot of people go without. Bubbles can be worked out of the screen, it's dust you have to be careful with. If I want to apply cleanly, I'll wipe the screen with a lint cloth before hand and apply in the bathroom where dust is generally minimal.

Re the battery, it does get better after the first 7-8 charges. One thing to remember is that Lithium batteries don't have a memory and they'll last longer if you're not letting them discharge completely all the time. I tend to charge mine at around 30-40%.

Nothing wrong with your English either. :)

Thank you for your quick response. Case Mate Emerge looks really nice and it is not that expensive but I'm interested in one thing. Case mate Emerge covers this line of dots (if I can call it that way haha) on the right side on the bottom. See the picture http://cdn.androidtapp.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/HTC-One-X-Plus-Back.jpg I don't know what this is nor I could find that in the user's manual. It's not covered with some cases that I found online including mine (cheap one). Do you know what's that?

Howdy!
I just got my hTC one x a couple of days ago, upgrading from the droid incredible 2.
I have an otterbox commuter case and find it protects the phone very well and makes it feel sturdy, the only thing I don't like is how slick the back of the case is. It is easy to take in and out of pocket.
I also like how it has the silicone plugs for the charging port and headphone jack, all the buttons have silicone over them.

It almost feels like it wants to slip out of your hand, I would much rather a rubberized texture on the back.

If they would have had a Seidio Active case at the store I would have definitely bought that.
It's a hybrid silicone and hard plastic case that has a kickstand on the back.

As for the screen protector, run the hot water in the bathroom for about five minutes, then shut it off, kinda crack the door, wait until the fog clears up and apply your screen guard in there, the hot steam the shower make will make the air heavy and all the dust and particles will sink to the floor.
Use a credit card to smooth on your screen while peeling the back off then just press out any bubbles with the credit card. :D

@El Presidente, thank you once again, so that means that it's no problem whether they're covered or not :-)

@blackepoxy - Thank you also. It seems like a funny thing to do, actually, every time I shower, I make a scenario like that. :)

Just one thing, can you recommend me site or app with the various wallpapers and skins for One X. I've tried couple of them but wallpapers don't fit exactly, pictures are either too small or too big :D

Try flickie for great wallpapers, it will auto detect for your one x.
You can also try zedge.
I think the resolution is 1440x1280.

Baldilocks on here also has tons of great wallpapers linked to his site, I saw them the other day somewhere around here...:p

Do you have hTC hub installed on your one x?
They have some free content there.

One more thing, have you applied all the updates to your phone as there is a couple of really important updates that directly affect the battery. Just go into settings, about, software updates... out of the box I didn't get much but after those it really improved and El Presidente is right it does take time for the battery to settle..

Hope you enjoy your new phone!

Hehe I'm glad for that.

By the way, I'm worried about one more thing. When there's no apps running (at least they are not shown in the Task Manager when I "kill them all" :-D) the green bar shows RAM usage around 580 - 680 MB. Is that OK? How can I be sure that there's no major apps running in the bacground when I shut them down?

Just leave Android to manage tasks of its own accord. The apps aren't actually running, they're being held in RAM. If you start killing things, Android will just start them back up again which will have a negative impact on your battery.

Android is based on Linux which works differently to Windows so it actually works better when more stuff is in RAM.

Okay, thanks :) I need assistance for one more thing, how can I put device in silent mode and back to normal without having to go to Settings, Sound and then Mode, is there any shortcut, like holding "#" on Nokia :D

Volume Rocker up and down should work for this.
Or the profile toggle in the HTC settings widgets.
Or if you don't like either of those you can get another toggle widget from the play store.

Enjoy your phone! :D

Newbie to ICS and one x...

The only problem I had with mine is after the first couple of days that I had it the phone kept losing signal going from 4G to E to G and showing no data connection available... It was doing this very erratically.
I hit the simulated battery pull combo, vol up & down and power for 3 seconds and it stopped after the reset and holds the 4G with a decent signal like before.
Now it's all gravy.

Now I think it was an app I downloaded called power toggles and hit the 3G/4G or toggles, or whatever, I uninstalled that before the battery pull also.
Funny how At&t calls HSPA 4G... Lol.

Thank you for advice.

Btw. I don't have problems with losing signal, cuz we don't have such an advanced mobile network in the Bosnia&Herzegovina, we just got 3G and it's not yet so stable, so 4G is only a fantasy :-D
