Help Newbie question

I just bought a COBY Android tablet. I got the email settings going. No problem there. Now when I click on EMAIL, I get a full-screen display of my inbox. I can REPLY, or DELETE the message, but I can find absolutely no way to create a new email. I have tried using the MENU key, and double-tapping the screen to make it smaller (and hopefully revealing more buttons around the periphery, but to no avail.

Can someone tell me how to create an email from scratch?

And android phone I have seen, you press Menu, then hit Compose or New.
