newbie RAM question

Hello everybody. I have a T-Mobile S2 and love it to death. I also have downloaded apparently for managing tam and cache and etc. I also have a 8gb sd card in it. Question is this, is it OK for your ram to dip to 100/784 and if so is that good or not? I've read posts and explanations how android works and it makes it easier to open apps up and etc. I just find it weird that dropping under 200 is OK since We want our phones to run faster. Also about the sd card. So when We move apps to the "sd", it's not really moving it there right? Am I misunderstanding people explanation of that? So Wu try h that being said, why would really need the sd card for more space? Again I'm new so sorry for the questions. But I hope some people can bring me insight. Thanks in advance

Android likes to cache apps into RAM. It's completely normal for your RAM to dip below 100 MB. If it gets too low, Android will automatically close apps that are the least used or most idle to clear up space. So there's no need for you to watch your RAM usage, unless you're experiencing slowdowns constantly.

RAM in Linux (which is what Android is built off of) does not operate the same in Windows, where more available RAM means more performance. Linux is much more efficient in this regard.

Thanks for your reply. My other question is about my battery. My phone has been unplugged for 3.5 hours and is at67%. I have to charge my phone mid day to make it last till night before I go to bed. So I'm wondering what could be using up my battery life?

ANOTHER question... so why all the task killer apparently out there?? Should We just avoid them then since android system kills things when it's too low.

Heh...one of Androids' most debated topics. For most users in most situations, if you're using Android build 2.2 (Froyo) or newer, then yes, you don't need a task manager. But just because Android has a good built in one (and has since Froyo), doesn't mean people seek out that knowledge and understand it.

But what is killing your battery could be any number of things. What are you doing with it? Do you constantly have the screen on? Are you using wifi? Is auto sync on? Do you use Facebook? And if you do, is Facebook set to refresh every 5 minutes (like it is by default...)?

As you can see, many folks come to Android from windows and panic about their device memory and run out and get a memory manager. I imagine enough folks aren't enlightened by sights like these that they are not needed that the free ones keep getting advert revenue and the paid ones, well, it's too late.

BTW, I fell for the trap too in my early OG Droid days, I got lucky and installed a free one, so I was not out any money.

it is ok for RAM to fall below 100... but will bogg down if it falls below 30; which it will not, in most normal cases. Bad apps or too many installed apps/widgets. so dont even think to much about it, unless you have problems.

yes.. moving apps to sd... does move portions of the app to the sdcard. which will help free up RAM/ROM. this is a very helpful thing.

Task killers are ONLY NEEDED ... when you have a BAD app that is miss behaving.. bad programming or it installed with an error. otherwise...stay away from task killers or trying to manage your memory... let android deal with it, and you enjoy your phone!

battery... it is a new phone to you, and you love it.. i suspect that you are playing with it a lot.. and killing the battery. over time, you will play with it less and less and the battery will last longer. (it took me 6 months to be able to leave it alone for a few hours at a time).
Also how is your cell / data signal in your area (home and work)... if it is low.. then your phone is constantly making quick/short calls to find a signal. which will eat up power on your battery.

Thanks, I will look into the fb thing and I know my autism is always on so I'll try that. I have my Wi-Fi and GPS off.
