Help Newbie seeks advice

Hi, would be grateful for some advice.

I've just acquired my first smartphone - a Samsung Galaxy Ace.

Any suggestions as to the most useful apps?

Thanks

Welcome!

There are a plethora of apps that can aid you. Among these would be "where's my droid" which helps you find your phone even if its on vibrate. It's much more lightweight than many other locator apps. Another, battery widget helps keep track of your battery level.

It all depends in your necessity. There's a whole lot more, weather, texting apps, launchers, and more. It's all about your necessity.

P.s. file browsers are a must. Same with advanced task killer, even tho many people here will say its a bad idea.

Best of luck!

get the following apps:

Evernote. for rtaking Notes across platforms
Dropbox for common access to you data files and pictures anywhere
quick office to read and edit msoffice files
es filemanager to do that
fandango to order your movie tickets on line and skip the ticket window.
Amazon kindle reader
news360
greader (used to recommend pulse, but now it has become terrible and you can't read and share without a lot of useless steps)
converter to convert scales for measuring everything
dolphin browser. vv good
boat browser. vv good
go launcher. vvg. (also adw launcher or nova ifyouhave aice Phil's Orr better)
handwrite if you need a jotting pad
gtasks to sync your to do from Google to phone
simple calendar to display a small, customizable
business calendar for a better monthly view

hopethis helps

Wow, lots of great recommendations. Many thanks to all of you for taking the time and effort to help me.

I'd much rather hear what's good from other people than simply wander blindly into app land, not knowing which apps are good and which aren't.

Thanks guys :-)

i've got a few more Qs - but if you're too busy to answer then no worries - I'm just chancing it really :-)

1. I'm keen to make it v difficult for anyone who might steal my phone to use it. I've enabled the screen lock (where u have to punch in a 4 digit code) but are there additional measures I can take? Also, are there tracking device apps out there so if someone does steal my phone it can be pinpointed to a specific geo location?

2. I want to be able to listen to music on my phone (I've got tunes in ITunes - can I upload these to my Samsung Galaxy Ace 2? If so, how do i do this?

3. And finally, I know how to take a pic using my camera - and I know how to send an email using my camera (Gmail) - but how do I attach a pic to the email?

Any answers/suggestions warmly welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Plenty. Lookout seems to be the most popular, but other might have features more in line with what you are looking for. I can't recommend anything as I don't use them personally.

2. I want to be able to listen to music on my phone (I've got tunes in ITunes - can I upload these to my Samsung Galaxy Ace 2? If so, how do i do this?

There are apps that emulate iTunes, but they really aren't necessary. Plug in your phone to your PC and if you don't see a folder called media or music, create it. If you do, just open it and copy the songs you want on your phone there. mp3 or m4a will be fine. Then, if you have playlists already in iTunes you'd like to use, right click on them in iTunes and export them a m3u to a folder on your phone called playlists. Again, if it's not there, create it.

Now enjoy your music. :D

3. And finally, I know how to take a pic using my camera - and I know how to send an email using my camera (Gmail) - but how do I attach a pic to the email?

Using the stock email app, when you are composing your email, tap on the menu button and you should see option there. Attach a file should be one of them. When you do it will ask you how you want to browse for it, just select the gallery.

Lunatic59 - I think you're something of a misnomer because the advice you have given me appears very sane indeed.

Many thanks for answering my questions - I shall go & put your recommendations into practice. :D

There's a reason for my name which has nothing to do with insanity ... well, not that much. ;)

A couple more apps you might find useful that others haven't mentioned (at least I do)

Wifi Analyzer
Weatherbug
Vignette
WidgetLocker
Camscanner
ES File Explorer
Keepscreen
Minimalistic Text (Widget)
QuickPic (Gallery replacement)
Widgetsoid

That should keep you busy. :D
