Spy Rock

Lurker
Hi everyone. I got my first Andriod phone about a month ago and now I have a serious case of "root_brain". I've been reading threads here but need some clarification.

My phone is "low end" but I love it!
Optimus T P509
Froyo 2.2.2

I've been reading about custom ROMs and Admin Permissions but before rooting I'd like to be sure that I can achieve my objectives.

Mainly, i'd like to eliminate all bloatware off the phone.
Facebook & twitter are always running in the background. I want those gone.
They also put f-book & twitter bookmarks in which I cannot remove.
The phone comes with google maps & nav but also "tele nav". I don't need both.
3 stupid game demos ill never play. Abc messaging which ill never use over google talk.
The T-mobile app pack and of course "Drive smart".

I want to be sure the bloat can be removed before rooting. The P509 has little internal memory which is wasted on redundant apps and the battery is constantly drained with help from facebook & twitter. Any info is greatly appreciated. :)

I just want to know for sure that I can get rid of

I'm a newbie also and the same goes for me. My galaxy s has 512 mb ram so I'd like to get rid of apps I dontm need. That telenav is the worst. Man, I would not trust it to find my way to the bathroom in my own house!

Bloat can of course be removed via rooting, or if you custom ROM, like CM7, those things are practically blank with only core apps (unremoveable part of system apps) contained. And sometimes a preinstalled launcher.

Good luck with your Optimus T. I'm moving this to the appropriate section, I think you'll find more/better answers there.

To RobertB-DC:
I wish i'd found your root journal before making my thread :o
You answered most of my questions in beautiful detail,
Thank you...thank you...thank you!

Now I have a decent grasp on how to go about removing the bloat and
How to make use of the freed up space on system partition after the bloat kill.

My plan is to buy titanium pro today and use "gingerbreak V1.2apk"

One question: do I also need "busy box"?
Any advice before I take the plunge (tonight) is hugely appreciated.

Thanks again Robert, your thread is awesome! :)

Aw, I'm blushing. :o FWIW, I didn't bother with updated ROMs, so I didn't need gingerbreak. I've been really happy with the stock ROM after getting rid of the bloatware. But I'll probably be itching to tweak further soon enough, so I hope to hear how your plunge goes!

Thanks 4 the reply Robert.

I never got a chance last night (crazy kids hid my phone....lol).

Tonight im diving in 4 sure.

I hope you don't mind a few more mundane questions.:p

1. I noticed you ditched "web2go" (im looking forward to that).
Will I then need a browser like opera for bookmarks? What do you
use for bookmarks?

2. Also noticed you ditched "thinkfree office" (again, looking forward to that).
So do you manage sd contents with Titanium or will I need an app like root explorer
for that?

Silly questions but i'm so used to the pc....lol. :)

Thanks again Robert.

Sorry, Christmas shopping has had me frazzled.

web2go isn't a browser, as far as I can tell... I think it's just another piece of T-Mobile bloatware. The stock browser is still installed, though I'm using xScope for my browser. Bookmarks don't work so well, though, especially when trying to create home screen shortcuts. I haven't needed them badly enough to mess with it, though.

I didn't even know ThinkFree had a file browser. I use the same app that everyone else does -- Astro File Manager. Why would I want to use a word processor as my primary file system manager, anyway? ;)

Just use the "freeze" option in TB Pro. It makes the phone think the app is gone without removing it. This way you can test the phone for any adverse reactions BEFORE actually removing the apps files off of your phone ;)

I just froze office off of my Optimus, and so far no problems, but I'll do more testing before the app gets the guillotine :p
