Newbie to Android app development

Hi all,

My name is Doug, I am a noob to app development but I have 13 years of other IT professions. Currently I own and operate a computer repair business named Tech Triage. Previously I worked as a technician at a computer parts reseller for a year and a half where I was in charge of and managed both the RMA (return merchandise accounts) and all testing of new parts and products before they were listed and added into the inventory. I found that job to be repeatedly boring because the highlight of my day was helping customers install their shipped part into their machines over the phone. So I didn't feel like it was fun anymore so I went back to my family bloodline business of the automotive trade. My family has been in the automotive industry since the early 1920's. So quit my tech job, which was bittersweet as I loved my crew but wanted to both move on and move forward. So I went to work for a friend at his shop solid Golden West Restorations, where I handled many different tasks.

My family is full of mechanics, gear heads, and weekend drag racers (both street and strip). No one in my family indulged in restorations and or custom car building. Although we have had local custom car builders come and go through our family shops no one truly was a car restoration tech or bodyman. So I decided to follow the road less traveled by my family. I worked at golden west for 9 years while also working at a local trade school (the same one I learned the pc trade) teaching automotive painting technology with my best friend and boss from Golden west. Golden west for over 25 years was the go to shop in the San Francisco Bay Area for high end clients that needed restorations on their mustangs, shelby mustangs, shelby cobras, and race car fabrications. We even restored Sammy Hagar's "Red Rocker" 1967 Shelby that he sold on Barrett Jackson for $250,000.

I was in charge of the office, website, online presence (various forums, craigslist, and many other online venues) I also worked there as a welder, metal fabricator, painter, vehicle historian, and parts guru. I was able to use both my computer technical skills, and my fabrication skills. I learned a lot about restoration and how to do them correctly. An yes it is possible to over restore a car.

I worked there for 9 years until my best friend and boss passed away in the shop while working late, of a heart attack, he was 66. I tried to take over the business but his wife didnt like the business and resented it because her husband would spend the majority of his time there instead of with her. She decided to close the business and not allow me or anyone else to buy it and or take it over. I also quit my job at the school due to the drama of budget cuts and class budgets that were basically running on fumes. It became more about the money and politics to the stuffed shirts than it was about the students. So it was time to leave. I needed a job and was out of work for about 5 months. My neighbor owned an aircraft repair shop at the local airport and needed help, so I decided to try that avenue out. It was really great, fun, and interesting. But just after 3 months, I got hurt on the job. I hurt my back to where I have a herniated disc in my spine that resulted in a pinched nerve. I have been out of work from my injury for about a year now. So I have come to the unfortunate realization that I most likely will not be able to return to my love of Car restorations, bodywork, metal fabrication, and or any other hard manual labor job that I have skills for.

So I found myself trying to find out what I was going to do. My girlfriend had mentioned that I could do computer repair again, and that started me in thinking about starting my own business as at this point, I am tired of having no control over the direction, and or the decisions of the business that employs me. So I started looking into it to see if it would be something that I could do competitively. So as I did my research, I found out that there still is a need and market for good quality technicians.

So I opened "Tech Triage - Computer Repair & Innovative IT Solutions"

I have been doing this for 3 months and so far everything has been great. I have future ideas that can be implemented if there is a call for it, and one one of those ideas is custom painted PC cases, laptop, tablet, and tower cases will be the main focus, but basically all electronic devices with plastic/metal surfaces and substrates that can be made or prepped to be resurfaced and painted. but that wont be for a while unless the market requires swift implication of the service.

So for now, Tech Triage offers affordable IT repair services and innovative solutions to all of my customer's technology needs. With over 13 years of tech experience any issues that my customers may encounter, Tech Triage will be there to locate and secure the problem and will deliver multiple solutions on how to approach and solve the problem.

I have always had a fascination with programming, specifically PC applications and android apps. I have background in web design as well so I decided a few weeks ago to try to research and learn how to design, build, and develop android applications as an extra service my tech company can offer. So here I am, learning from square one. I have edited java script for websites but I have never written any of it from scratch. Well I guess I will wrap up this novel of an intro lol.

I am very new to app development so if anyone happens to know of any good tutorials via YouTube, or online somewhere that they could recommend that would be great! Any help, suggestions, and or links will be greatly appreciated but not required of course. Looking forward to learning about android app design and development. Thanks guys!
