Root Newbie wants to root 2.2 with 3.70

Newbie
Hi to all...

I have Htc Evo running Android 2.2 Build 3.70. I am newbie to Android and want to know easiest way (if possible with 3.70) to root my phone. Primary reason is I want to be able install apps that can change my phone fonts. What should I do? Please keep in mind newbie part and if downgrade is requested point me to right direction because I don't want to brick my phone.

Thanks for any reply's.

You have a couple of options. Unrevoked (the easiest method) does not currently work with hboot 2.10 (what you have). They are working on an update right now. Your best bet is to wait until it is release, and spend that time reading as much as you can. Start with this:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies-extras.html

You obviously can't do the primary root method in that thread yet, but there is a great deal of information you will need to know once you're rooted.

You do have the ability to root right now using this method:

[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - The Savior Edition - Upd. 12.26.10 - xda-developers

I do not recommend this method unless you know exactly what you're doing, and understand all the steps. It's much easier to brick your phone this way.

Oh, and welcome to AF :)

Thank for your reply. Now I read it somewhere that sprint store can do downgrade to 2.1 for users, is this true ?

1) No, you can't downgrade a stock phone that has hboot 2.10 (comes with sw version 3.70). Sprint won't do it either.

2) With root, you could flash a 2.1 rom, but why would you want to? Are you just asking so it would be easier to root? If that's the case, it's an older hboot that you want.

3) The above being the case, you technically cannot downgrade your hboot once you have 2.10. There are some exceptions to that rule (eng hboot), but you need to have:

a) s-off, already
b) an older phone (not late model 0003 or 0004)

It's really not recommended.

Thanks! Btw my phone did not come with 3.70, I upgrade by mistake.
Then I guess best thing is to wait until something new comes up. I want to do this for 2 reason:

1. Possible change of fonts (main reason)
2. Wi-Fi tethering.

If you're not fully comfortable with the method I linked to above, your best bet is to wait for the unrevoked update. You shouldn't have to way too much longer, hopefully.

I will take your advice and wait... while waiting I will read forum around for possible solutions :)

I'm also in the same situation, upgraded to 3.70 now I can't root my phone. Hopefully it won't be too long before someone come up with an easy method for it.

follow the link akazabam gave to xda. I have 2.2 with 3.70 and HBOOT 2.10 and used that guide to get root with no prior knowledge of rooting or ADB. Its very easy to follow, took me about 15 minutes.

Was this your first time rooting? Kudos for being bold. I think I will wait also. I'm bold but cautious if that makes any sense :D

Yeah I am waiting also... new EVO here w/ the 2.10 on it.. as when I was getting it moved over to my account the rep had me update it... dang it...
I wish I had read the forums before I did that GRRRrrrr...
Love the EVO... came from a Hero... I put Fresh 2.4 on it...
I think I will stick w/ Flipz's ROMS....
salute Gatr

Called Sprint and since I have some issues (most of it location) with update they told me to bring the phone in repair center where they can reset RLS to wipe out update and roll back to previous / manufectured OS version ? If succesfull will notify you on Friday...

yes it was my first time. I admit i was a bit skeptical at first and was willing to wait for unrevoked but i got impatient. I figured it was under warranty so if anything did happend i could have it fixed(hopefully).
But i read over the instructions thoroughly first(about 3 times) then tried it. got it on the second try. First time I had sd card problems. But overall quick and painless.

I just got a refurb from Sprint with hboot 2.02, sadly, so while I know there are directions to root it now, I don't feel comfy with 'em, so I'll wait for an updated unrevoked.
