Newbie Wi-Fi ??

I like using my phone for texting mainly so I have a very cheap phone plan. I just discovered that all my time was eaten up by data usage. I thought I was connecting to my home router or other places I can get on for free.

So is there a way to make sure my phone doesn't do anything that would rack up data charges?

Will I still be able to connect to my home router for free? So in theory I'd like to be able to seach google when at home on my network but as soon as I leave I don't want it connecting to the mobile one and costing me.

If you're on wifi it doesn't use data unless it's sending/receiving mms.

You could go into your settings and turn off data.

You can try turning off 3G using this app. You can turn off the 3G and turn on WIFI in it.
Quick Settings available from the market for free.

Also in settings > Mobile Network > you can uncheck Use packet data.

APNdroid is a handy toggle widget for data on/off.

Also, go in your settings battery manager & make custom profile for turning off data at certain times. Also in settings is the data manager.

If you don't want to use mobile internet at all, go to menu>settings>wireless and networks>mobile networks>data>off

As long as you are in range of WiFi, your data plan will not be used, so as long as you are on top of it, you do not need to disable data usage if you happen to want to use it later.

Well, that is what we think, but there is a lot going on with data in the background we are un aware of. OP has discover this. Turn it off when U are on a limited data plan is the best advice.

Its not what we think, I'd think its true, whatever background service is running. This only becomes an issue when the WiFi signal is not very good, that the phone sometimes disconnects. If a sync was happening at that time, it will use the network connection until it finishes.
