Root NewbieQ:How to backup before unlocking bootloader?

My goal is to install Cyanogenmod, so as recommended on their wiki I installed Titanium and Astro. Unfortunately, Titanium requires the phone to be rooted, which in turn requires the bootloader to be unlocked, which wipes the phone - seem to defeat the purpose.

Am I completely out of luck doing a Titanium backup, and if so what will come closest to that level of backup? Any other tips?

Not much you can do. Just back up your data. Your apps will be retrievable from the Market. Settings, you are mostly out of luck unless the program exports and imports settings to and from the SD card.
