Hi all, two things, one Newegg has Samsung 64 GB micro cards on sale, which you can find at the following link, but Two, is this card something that will work in the Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet? I am so confused by what will and will not work!! Will this work? Is there a better card this size and less than a buck a Gig? This is driving me nuts!!!
Thanks for all you guys do in answering us newbies questions!!!

Bhero, thanks! Could you point me in a direction to learn how to read those specks so I can understand how to figure this out?

I am waiting on delivery of my Note 10.1, but downloaded the manual for it online to get a headstart. In there it says you can only use micro sdhc cards, all the 64GB cards are listed as micro sdxc. Did the acceptable card configuration change after the manual was published, because, I, too, want to get a 64GB card for mine. Was this due to a change in the OS? (ICS to JB) Thanks.

There are better deals on Amazon for the San Disk 64GB cards. (about $10 cheaper)

Hi cneajna, I'm pretty sure it is due to Jelly Bean, at least I think I read that somewhere!!!
If it weren't for this forum I would not have even found the manual! I haven't spent much time with it yet.
Thanks for the tip on the Amazon SanDisk - I was interested in this one only because I had hoped that being the same manufacturer it would be for sure compatible!

Answering questions about card compatibility:

When Note 10 was created 64GB cards were scarce and also manufacturers like playing it safe, but 64GB works just fine. If you have problems, format it to FAT32 using GUIFormat or something similar.

After reading this thread I was planning on getting the 64 gb card for my new Note 10.1. While in a chat with a Samsung chat over registration issues I asked about the SanDisk 64gb card. Please note that I am NOT questioning what has been said here, I am questioning the Samsung tech. :)
When I asked he asked me what color my Note was, it is the GT_N8013 in Deep Gray with Android version 4.1.2 preinstalled.
He said no, only a 32gb card.
Now for my question, what difference does color make, other than possibly a particular model batch?

This seems pretty silly to me, lol

Hi Claudia, I don't know for sure but maybe because it hasn't upgraded to Jelly bean? I hope that is the case as I have the same model! I have not yet bought a card for it as I am still plying with what I want to do with it and had an 8 GB that I'd gotten for my phone and have it in the tablet and don't need the bigger one just yet. I don't watch movies and such as we have the worlds slowest DSL!!!
I hope someone else knows for sure!

Android 4.1.2 is Jelly Bean, and the most recent release version in the U.S.?
I also hope someone knows for sure as I do know what I want to do with mine.:) I'm an artist and photographer, and I take video of my other half when he races his drag car and upload to the tablet right at the track so he can watch his run minutes after making it. I'm sure I can make do with an extra 32 gb but I would prefer 64. I suspect the Samsung tech isn't really a tech at all and is just reading from a script like so many so called techs are today.

Hahaha, colour makes a huge difference, of course. Deep gray only works with 64GB uSD cards that are black in colour and the white Note 10.1 only works iwth 64GB cards that are red!

Mwahahahahahahahahaha

I just got my sandisc 64 last night. I took my old 32g disc out, copied the files on it to my new 64 and stuck it back into the tab. Works flawlessly so far.

I think that rep was confused and just told you the largest memory that the model comes with, which would be 32GB. A 64GB MicroSD card will work on Jelly bean. I was in Costco the other day and heard the rep telling a customer that the Note 10.1 could only use up to a 32GB card. After the customer left, I asked him if he was aware that the jell bean update allows for a 64GB MicroSD card and he said he would have to research it.

This is what Samsung.com states for the Note 10.1

Internal 2GB RAM & 16GB On-board Memory
External microSD, microSDHC up to 64 GB
SD Card Up to 32GB

I guess it could be confusing to someone that isn't familiar with the device. NOTE it does state up to 32 GB SD card. Guess, a person would have to be specific and ensure they say MicroSD.

Actually, Samsung seems pretty 'confused' about this issue since there is no universal spec sheet they follow... :p

In Canada, the Note 10.1 specs state support up to 32GB. However, if you go to their 'general' site, it'll state up to 64GB. It even states user memory models available as 16/32/64GB. Never seen a 64GB Note 10.1 and not sure which region actually carries it.

So simply put, external microSD 64GB is not 'officially' supported. The reason why (in the past) 64GB was not listed as being supported was because some firmware versions did not support exFAT file format (which is a standard format for all SDXC cards). And many people who are not tech savvy, would not know how to format these cards to FAT32. Since Windows' own tools will not allow it.

Also, you won't get the added speed benefits that SDXC cards toot as the Note 10.1 does not have the hardware for it. You would at best still be using speed Class 10 or lower. Dependent on quality of the card, etc.

Actually the android version has nothing to do with the compatibility, most devices were released when the 32 GB sdhc was the largest available, I've yet to encounter an issue with using 64 GB sdxc cards in these devices, although you may have to format them beforehand as fat32, and since MS removed the capability to format fat32 larger than 32 GB since Vista you're going to have to use a 3rd party tool. :D

As you stated, FAT32 was the norm for standard format on all current SD cards up to 32GB (SD/SDHC). When SDXC cards came out, they adapted the newer exFAT format (which Vista introduced). This was where the compatibility issues occur. Some previous device firmware did not support this file format and needed to be added or updated in the next firmware (if ever). Again, some people are not tech savvy about it when it comes down to formatting, partitioning, cloning, etc.

Also, I don't think there's a device out in the market to date that can utilize the full benefits of SDXC besides storage space. Also put off by the reliability and failure rates of certain SDXC cards (Sandisk in particular) at the time.
