Help Nexus 4 Bootloop after OTA / Image Flash

JaeThi

Newbie
Soooo how long should it take to boot up? I've been stuck on the boot animation for some time now. I was having this issue after OTA updating and so I did this and now I am having the same issue. Am I doing something wrong? I think I did all the steps correctly. I followed them to the tee and it seemed to flash everything ok.

Thank you in advance

Hi @JaeThi, and welcome to Android Forums :)

What device do you have?

Thank you @codesplice , I have a nexus 4. I bought it off craigslist and thought id update it to the newest OS and so I just did an OTA update and it got stuck on the boot animation after reboot and so I tried this tutorial to flash the OS and I am having the same issue.

Thanks, I went ahead and spun your posts out into their own thread in the Nexus 4 forum. :thumbsupdroid:

A few more questions for you:
  1. Did the phone work fine before flashing the OTA?
  2. What Android version was it on pre-OTA?
  3. Was the OTA automatically downloaded and installed, or did you try to manually sideload it?
  4. When you flashed the factory image, did you let it wipe userdata as well?
  5. Did you receive any errors at all while flashing the image?
  6. Lastly, and possibly most importantly, how long have you been waiting for it to boot? It can often take up to 20 minutes depending on the exact update.
I'm about to have to call it a night, but I'll check back in once the sun rises again. :D

@codesplice
1. The phone worked perfectly fine before OTA
2. It was on android 4.2.2
3. The OTA was automatically downloaded and installed
4. Yes, I did.
5. No errors when flashing the image.
6. I have been waiting approximately 20 minutes
Thank you again!

Hmm, do you know what version the OTA was? I'm not sure that there's a direct path from 4.2.2 to 5.x. And what image did you download? LMY47O or something older?

Thanks again for the prompt responses - it's tough to troubleshoot an issue when I can't see what's actually going on, so the more detail the better. :thumbsupdroid:

I do need to head to bed, though. I'll check on you in 8 hours or so. ;)

I will try to flash 4.2.2 again and go from there in the meantime.
Sounds good, that was going to be my next suggestion - flash an older factory image and then work forward either through OTAs or subsequent flashes (depending on your patience level).

@codesplice
I flashed 4.2.2 last night and let it try to boot overnight with no luck. I tried erasing the cache and still no luck. When I get home I'll try a factory reset and if that doesn't work I'll take a look at Wugfresh's NRT, which I was reading about in another thread with the same issue. Other than that, do you have any ideas?

Any updates? Sorry I'm just checking in again... it's been a busy day here.

Wug's toolkit may be worth a shot, but I'm generally not a fan of toolkits - they usually do the same thing that the manual process does, but you learn more doing it manually and are thus better equipped to recover from unexpected hiccups. There are plenty of folks who swear by them, so the choice is entirely yours. :)

Can you boot into the stock recovery? (From fastboot, use the volume key to scroll down to "Recovery" and press the Power button.) You should see an Android lying on his back. Press Volume-Up + Power to access the recovery menu. Do you get any errors in recovery?

Give the NRT a shot. It apparently has an option for recovering from a bootloop (based on this thread, at least).

I've never actually used it, so I can't help with any details, but hopefully it's easy enough to figure it out. :D

Good luck!

I'm not sure that the OTA will give you any positive results without a good base to start from. OTAs are essentially "delta updates" - they only include files that have changed since the previous version.

A "lighter" ROM like CM might be worth a shot.

I wish I had more ideas. This is really odd. :-/

I'm here eagerly waiting for updates and offering moral support, even if that's about all I can offer at this point. :D
