Nexus 4 Camera?

Hello. I am currently using an iPhone 4S on Verizon and switching to T-Mobile and Android :) I was thinking of the Nexus 4 because it is among the cheapest for a high-end smartphone at full retail price. One of my main uses for my smartphone however is the camera. I love the camera on the 4S, so I was wondering how the camera is on the Nexus 4 and how it compares. If it's not that great, does anyone know of an Android phone that has a similar $300 full retail price with a better camera? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The N4 is great for allot of things, but the camera isn't top-of-the line. Depending on what you use your camera for and your preferences, you might want to check out the HTC One or the Samsung Galaxy S4. Both are more expensive, but both have better cameras. And, if you're switching to T-Mobile, you can drop your 300$ down up front and pay off the rest via their new payment programs for phones that would allow you to pay it off before 2 years.

Regardless, I stop by a T-Mobile corporate shop and you should be able to handle all three (The N4, the One, and the SGS4) and see which one you like best. That will help you decide more than any reviews or opinions you may find.

Have fun!

If you're coming from a 4s, you'll likely view the nexus 4 as a downgrade camera wise. Not to say that it's a bad camera, because it's leaps and bounds better than my Galaxy Nexus camera was, but there are certainly better cameras out there on different phones. Samsung as of late has become quite good at having quality cameras on their devices.

Dont hope for awesome pictures on the N4. Thats the only thing I miss about my Note 2, but I still love my Nexus!!

Really, people just have to have something to b!tch about.
The nexus 4 takes amazing photos. The camera sensor itself is made by Sony and the very same sensor ships on high end devices today.

Agreed, there are some nice photo's there, most taken outside with a decent source of light.

Stuff taken in lower light, not so great.
For me the flash is just slightly bright...then again I love the reaction I get after blinding folks I take pictures of. Pretty rad!:D

From what I can recall of my missus' iP4, the camera was slightly better than the N4, though not in all circumstances and not by that great a margin. I know megapixels aren't really that important, but I believe the N4 has nearly twice as many as the iP4.

My missus and I often end up taking pictures of the same thing at the same time and while some of her pictures are better, as often as not mine are better because I tend to think more about composition, lighting, use of a fill-in flash etc.

If you want a really good camera on your phone though, then the phone to beat at the minute is the new HTC One. That's had rave reviews pretty much everywhere and the camera uses a bigger sensor than on any other phone so it produces results that are literally unbeatable (because of the underlying physics of light).

Unfortunately, I don't think you're going to be able to get an HTC One for anything close to $300. If that's your cash limit, your best bet is probably to buy it subsidised with a 2 year contract.

I'm curious why you don't just stick with your iPhone?

I can understand why people might want to change: iPhones have many advantages, including build quality and (compared to the N4) LTE, however they still somehow feel a bit .. two years ago.

For example, whenever I use my missus' iP5 the screen - which is already bigger screen than an iP4's - feels almost comically small. To the point where for some things like browsing standard web pages, it affects usability.

Not saying that iPhones aren't great for some people - my missus loves hers. I do think Apple need to come up with something a bit more radical this year, though.

Ive literally just got my n4 in the post. Coming from an S3, was a shock to see the quality of the camera. But im not disappointed, i rarely take pictures anyway haha.

Some will disagree!

I'm in the camp of the photographer being just as important as the camera, and honestly the n4 doesn't take bad pics at all! I've gotten some really really good shots with my n4, and I'm also an iphone user as well. Have owned all of em, including the 4S, and currently the 5. And I have to say that the n4 is not that far behind either of them.

I strongly disagree. The photographer is much more important to the end result than the camera, they're not equals.

As for the Nexus 4 camera: as an emergency camera it's fine for my purposes (as a photographer for well over half a century) although it's very rare that I don't have a "proper" camera of some sort with me.

Also beware HDR mode. It gives you a nice preview which does not reflect the actual picture.

Otherwise, for simple snaps, fun, nights out, my son playing etc the N4 camera is fine.

Your totally missing the point! Most people think anyone can take a great picture as long as they're using a good shooter!

What I'm saying is the person taking the picture has a lot to do with how pics come out, with that being said...excuse my unenthusiastic way of saying this but this topic has been BEATTTTTTTT TO DEATH!

And to just be clear I think the nexus 4 camera is a pretty good shooter! In certain situations I've seen my n4 beat my iphone 5, which to be honest with
Is a tough decision oN
