Help Nexus 4 Lollipop OTA bootloop

pubahs

Lurker
Hey downloaded the update OTA last night and my phone downloaded it and synced my apps but is now stuck on a bootloop. Any ideas how to escape this without losing all my data?

Any help would be appreciated folks

Hello and welcome to Android Forums, Pubahs. :)

When you say bootloop, do you mean continually restarting? or just stuck on the splash screen? Did you have your phone rooted and/or a custom recovery installed?

Hey. Thanks for the welcome

Yeah its stuck on the splashscreen.

As far as I know it was neither as it was simply the update that appeared on my notification bar. I just plugged it in and let it run its course as I've done with the other updates that have come out in the past.

Ah. Well lollipop has switched from Dalvik to ART and to recompile all your apps can take some time. It may not be stuck. Let it boot and give it 30 minutes or so. You might be fine.

Yeah all the apps were recompiled and I thought happy days! But then it started up for the first time post update and got stuck on the splashscreen for a good 5hrs. There's definitely something gone wrong!

Yeah, I'd say so. :(

Can you get into recovery? Try clearing the cache. There was another report of something similar and they used Wug's toolkit to boot a temporary custom recovery and wipe the dalvik cache. After that it worked fine.

Yeah clearing the cache in recovery mode didn't help.

I could give Wug's a try, I spotted that post but I thought it was meant for a manual download which they had performed and there may have been an easier fix for this.

I suppose the easiest fix would be to restore factory settings, which may be a last resort!!

Yeah only thing I don't have in the cloud are my contacts, and losing some of them may have some benefits...!

Since I'm lazy I gave in and just did a factory reset which seems to have done the job.

Clearing the cache in stock recovery only clears the apps cache partition. You need TWRP or CWM to clear the dalvik cache. I'd try that first and then move right to flashing the stock image and don't worry about the OTA.
