Root Nexus 5 lost recovery

On a newer LG Nexus 5 with Android 6.0.1 installed, in the hope of rooting I appear to have successfully flashed twrp recovery, but after restarting the phone and undergoing a normal startup, the recovery is the dead android with red triangle:

# fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.7.1-hammerhead.img
target reported max download size of 1073741824 bytes
sending 'recovery' (14694 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.574s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 1.139s]
finished. total time: 1.713s
#

I would very much appreciate some help getting this problem resolved, please?

After you flash recovery you have to boot into it before doing a normal boot

Excellent, thanks so much. For some reason I understood that a system boot was first necessary, which was wrong. Again, thank you.

[EDIT] When in TWRP recovery, I booted into System and was presented with the opportunity to root the device which I selected, as that is the motivation here.

Now the Nexus 5 is in a boot loop. After waiting about 1/2 hour for the system to boot, I power down and the device immediately reboots. Attempts to hold all three controls and enter bootloader fails.

Any advice for that issue please? The phone is unusable in its current state.

(Later) I was able to get into bootloader mode and re-flashed the hammerhead-mmb29k images which restored phone functionality, then flashed again TWRP recovery. From within TWRP I installed UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip which is what is causing the problem, as the boot loop again exists.

However, BETA-SuperSU-v2.64.zip works as expected, so again I thank you.[/EDIT]

Glad you got it. Under Marshmallow you now have to flash a custom kernel in order to get root. The first time I tried to root with out the custom kernel I also hit a boot loop.
