Help Nexus 6 randomly turns off

In the last month my device has suddenly shut off like three or four times, I will typing or reading something and the device goes dark. Each time it has happened I have been able to turn the phone back on with trouble

Rogue app perhaps? Not yet had that issue on the nexus 6.

The nexus 9 in its early days would restart like that but as the updates have come, that has not been much of an issue.

Just wanted to relate my experience with my N6 randomly powering off/rebooting. When I got my N6 this past spring I also purchased a Spigen Neo Hybrid case. This case has separate buttons in it that contact the buttons on the N6 itself. I had the problems with it rebooting itself. Also, I'd hand it to my wife to show her something. She'd grab it and naturally hit the buttons with her fingers. A month or so ago I bought a different case - a Cruzerlite. This case has cutouts where the buttons are. So, it protects them from accidental activation. Since I switched cases I have not had a single unexplained power off or reboot and when I hand it to my wife she no longer accidentally pushes a button.

I realize this probably does not apply to everyone. Just thought I'd pass it on for whatever it's worth.

I read through the forum quickly, so if I missed a similar post I apologize. I've been researching the Nexus 6 reboots for a couple weeks now. I received mine in December and had experienced few, and sometimes many, reboots. I have seen the Spigen Neo Hybrid issue come up on other forums as well as here, and I firmly believe that contributed to some of my reboots. As much as I like their cases, this one was not the best. It was certainly making my phone reboot because the keys would get stuck on the power button. This alleviated some of the problem, but unfortunately not all. I did all of the following without any luck:

-Factory Reset
-Uninstalled all non-google items
-cleared cache in apps and in recovery

The only thing I did after getting it down to basic stock, was to change the home launcher from the pre-installed Google Now launcher, to ZenUI. Once I installed ZenUI I made it my default launcher. Once I did that, I haven't had one single reboot that I didn't manually do myself. I can't tell you if JUST changing the stock launcher did it, or if ZenUI made it more stable. All I can tell you is that it worked for me, and I'm not touching it again.

Hope this helps someone. Thanks.

I received my stock Nexus6 2 days ago. Owned a Nexus5 for 2 years, and a Nexus 5x for 6 weeks. Hopefully my details below will help a developer realize where the problem of Shutdown is. Some of my problems were consistent.

I transferred all my files and setup and apps, data and upgrade 6.0.1 without installing the NanoSim from t-mobile yet or my case.
After I installed the SIM card and before I installed the case, the Shutdowns started happening. 3 back-to-back shutdowns happened while tapping the Upper-case H on keyboard. The battery was charged, but the Icon said the battery was empty while it refused to power on. After some time, the power button worked to turn it back on after the Battery Icon showed some charge.

After turning off High Accuracy location services, the problem with the H tap went away. But I have 2 APPs that require Hi Accuracy location mode. I found that if I launch either while on WiFi with CellularData disabled, the Shutdown when launching the App went away. Both Apps would cause the phone to SHUTDOWN (never reboot) when the first one was launched if Hi Accuracy mode was enabled.

Also, I have a Wireless Charger for my Nexus5. If I put my Nexus6 on the charger, it shutdown, unless I have Airplane Mode enabled. I can connect the phone to the Wireless charger with Airplance mode on, then disable Airplane mode, and it doesn't shutdown.

Also please note when the Shutdown problem happens, the Battery status setting graph shows a temporary battery level of ZERO charge for the time it would not power on.

I will try the ZEN UI and post results.

UPDATE: after I posted this, I had a terrible time with the Nexus 6 phone shutting down and it stopped booting until I put it on a charger. I installed the ZenUI (default GoogleNow launcher suspended), and after that I no longer had the problem of Shutting down launching the Hi Accuracy Apps or for Wireless Charging (so far). I did have a problem of Shutting down while using the Play Store to update other apps. Only happened once.

Update 2: Happened bad again with ZenUI launcher, but this time 3 times in a row with launching of Google MAPS app, then would not power on again until power cable attached. Battery lost from around 89% to about 51% in less than 10 minutes. So far, only happened with Maps and with PlayStore.

Update 3: Has now happened even with DEVICE ONLY location services, therefore Hi Accuracy is not at fault, but I have noticed it happens frequently when PlayStore apps notify me of an UPDATE available. Also, it seems to happen less often when the charger is connected or when the phone is in a cradle. More often when upside down or laying flat. Happened 3 times in a row opening a Chrome page of the newspaper article about ridesharing where I posted a comment previously.

Okay over the last month I have been random problems. First my device shut down twice out of the blue (battery was fully charged, I wasn't touching it either) I have been having serious problems with the camera and it not working I will tap the camera icon and nothing. Last I tapped on the camera icon it open to a black screen, when I tried to exit it out nothing, device was frozen , I powered it off and then back on which fixed the problem, I figured there was some internal communication error or something. I notice too it's taken longer to charge (I kind figure that would happen as time passes). I have performed multiple cache wipes, uninstalled multiple apps. I don't want too but I am thinking of doing a factory reset I haven't done one in over a year opions ???

Well honestly I'd need more evidence before I could speculate. Are you rooted? Running custom ROM? Anything out of the ordinary?

I have had mine since launch and have experienced few problems, including the charging thing you mentioned. Mine still charges quickly (tho it does get a little warm when on the quick charger) and I do not have software issues as you've described. Mines stock running the latest update of Marshmallow. I do load my own updates so I have "factory reset" mine twice in the past 12 months or so. I will say ... in my experience all cell phones run better if you clean them up once and a while (every 6 months at the latest) so I'd recommend the factory reset. As long as you back everything up it's really not THAT big of a pain in the kiester.

I am running stock Android what ever the current version of marshmallow is. Today I discovered something else, I did a factory reset last year and lost alot of book marked sites, alot I remembered but I lost around six sites couldn't recall the website names today they showed back up. Also today I cleared by browsing history about an hour later, stuff I had cleared last week was back and stuff I hadn't even searched for was showing up

Gremlins. or ... Aliens.

I think at this point your best bet is to back everything up and wipe that bad boy clean, factory reset, clear all caches and then reinstall your OS and start from scratch. It's not a difficult process and somewhere in here is a step by step that Lunatic put together for yours truly.

Good luck man, I can tell you, when the N6 is right, and all is well, it's a really awesome device.

Actually it's probably Google (which is run by aliens, FYI) sync'ing all your history and bookmarks from your account, whether you use a mobile device or desktop. Personally, I like it, but others find it a little obtuse, obnoxious or otherwise intrusive.

I am thinking it's time to factory reset, this morning I was snapping pictures of the kids and the device froze up, I had to power off which took a while and then power it up so I will probably be doing the reset later tonight

Okay one thing I really don't like doing is factory resets, yes I know sometimes you have no choice, so Friday night I was going to do the reset, but at the last minute decided against it. I instead uninstalled about a dozen apps wipe the cache, power the device off for ten minutes, restarted it and since then it has run alot better.
Had an issue with the battery charging, turn out to be a bad USB cable.
I also manage to bring my wife's note 2 back from the dead. I uninstalled every app I could performed multiple cache wipes. Her phone which hasn't been able to hold a charge longer than three hours after charging for 8 hrs. Charged last night in about three hours and today lasted 12 hrs, before the battery needed to be charge. She has been using a Samsung Galaxy grand prime , decent phone for a quick replacement on the fly, however no memory

Been almost a week since I got my nexus 6 and wife's note 2 running again with out issues. The wife's phone lasted one day for 16 hrs before it needed a charge. So those issues as of now seem to be resolved, now I have a new issue and nothing to do with a nexus 6, but rather a Amazon Kindle my three year old daughter seems to have misplaced her Kindle and I haven't been able to locate it in a week or two. So we turned the wife's spare into a mini tablet

My Nexus 6 turns off when taking picture using android stock camera, while mobile network is GPRS or EDGE and "save location" is turned on in stock android camera settings.

Did you have such problem?

OK this week I had a serious oh **** moment with the phone, I was reading something using the Flipboard app when suddenly my screen flashed bright white and then device went dark. I hit the power button thinking maybe it went into sleep mode, no response. I tried the home button no response, I tried the power button holding it down nothing. I thought well maybe the battery is dead, but demised it because I had taken it off the charger an hour before and I knew it was fully charged. I let the phone sit for a while and then tried to see if it would power back on. Nothing. I let the phone sit more and then retired nothing. So I let it sit longer, finally I went and checked on it and it was on. I have no idea what happened. One minute it was fine, the next it was a paperweight. It was probably close to an hour before it came back on. Since then everything has been fine, smooth sailing, all systems go

Was it very hot at the time it winked out? It could have been a thermal protection circuit kickin' in.

specify, we have discussed a few different things on this thread. Is it just randomly shutting down? restarting? what's happening prior to this, have you downloaded or installed any new apps? Tell us everything every detail you can think of and lets see if we can figure this out
