Nexus 7 and USB Headset

Can someone give me some information how to get a USB headset to work on Nexus 7 2012. I connected it via OTG. All I can do is control the volume on the device using the headset's volume controls, but the sound still comes through via the speaker not the headphones. Any idea how this could be fixed? Thank you

Most OTG peripheral lists (the list of what the device can use via OTG) don't list headsets. It's mainly designed for storage devices. Most cellphones also include HIDs (mice, keyboards, etc.)
