Help Nexus 7 How To thread

Anyone know how to read .mobi eBook files on the N7? While the Kindle Android app can read .mobi files, you are required to put the files directly in the Kindle folder for them to be seen. Apparently this is not possible with the way the Nexus 7 mounts because I'm unable to find a Kindle folder after mounting. The iReader app also supports .mobi files, but crashes on Android 4.1 after pointing it to a .mobi file.

I initially had difficulty enabling the Swype keyboard on the N7. The step where you long press in a text field to choose which keyboard to use doesn't appear possible with Android 4.1. The solution I found was to go into Settings > Language and Input > Default > Mark the circle next to Swype (or any alternate keyboard).

On my ICS phone, whcih is admitedly a custom rom so may be different to stock, a notification pops up when you're entering text that lets you change.

There are two places where you have to enable Swype. One is the popup you mention and then you have to long-press in a text field to choose the Swype keyboard. When I long press in any text field I get the nice blue arrow which is intended for moving the cursor.

On ICS and JB, long pressing the text field doesn't let you select a keyboard now.

When you're in a text field, there should be a tiny keyboard icon in the notification tray. If you swipe down the notification shade, you should see a notification that you can tap to change your input method.

If you download Calibre on your computer (PC, Mac, Unix?) it will convert between formats. If you convert your .mobi to .epub, you have a wide range of readers to choose from.

If the file has DRM, that's a whole other issue and the conversion probably won't work.

This being my first post Gingerbread device, there's a bit for me to learn.

I have one main frustration. Why did Google remove the ability to long press on the desktop to add a shortcut (either a bookmark, widget, or app)? This was far easier and more intuitive.

I have yet to succeed in adding a web page bookmark on my desktop of my Nexus 7. It's really clunky. Anyone have a tip to make this easy?

I sent the mobi books to my dropbox folder on the pc then on the nexus 7 when you go into the dropbox app and save to SD card the kindle folder comes up. I couldn't figure it out initially either.

I know Google Maps can't do offline navigation without data (at least not well, like it can't re-route you if you veer off course), but I've heard that some of the other GPS apps in the Play Store can. Does anyone have a list of those that will that are N7 compatible, whether paid or free (figure I can use some of my $25 on one if needed)? Anyone have a favorite non-GMaps GPS navigation app?

Great tip; thanks. I may have to install Dropbox. Interestingly I tried what you describe with Google Drive and it doesn't allow you to save items to a specific folder... Yet.

Yeah, that's what I meant :)

I know some of the launchers on the market, like apex launcher or nova launcher, still let you long press to add widgets and so on. They support landscape orientation too.
