Nexus 7 justification for no smartphone???

Hey everyone!

So currently I have a Droid Razr M which I absolutely love and a MacBook Pro 2009 which I also love. I'm currently in school right now and I lug my laptop everywhere I go. It's only a 13" screen but it's still a hassle since I'm also carrying calculus, chemistry, and physics books.

I wanted something more portable and convenient for my situation. I have e-textbooks from time to time (I do this semester) and I'd rather have something smaller to read my textbooks and regular e-books. I'm sold that the 2013 Nexus 7 is the way to go but I can't justify buying it if I have a smartphone and laptop.

Would it be ideal to give up my smartphone for a regular non-data phone and get the Nexus 7? My internet plan for my phone is $30 a month and the Nexus is only $229. With my laptop and tablet I feel having a smartphone would be redundant.

Let me know what you think. I also currently have a GPS in my car so I don't need my phone for that and my wife has a iPhone (which sucks but she has internet anywhere).

Thanks guys! :)

Yeah if youre gona have your tablet with you all the time then a smartphone is pretty redundant.
Can you tether on your carrier? If so you could buy a wifi only nexus 7 and wifi tether it to the phone?
If not then i say yeah, buy a cute lil dumbphone and save some pocket space :)

I have Verizon and I think so but I don't know how "tethering" works. Sorry, I've heard of it but don't know anything about it

I think(?) Verizon block it but i dont know much about US networks.
In the phone settings, under wireless and networks, if you tap "more" there should be "tethering and portable hotspots"?
It basically turns the phone into a wifi router

Keep in mind that switching to a dumb phone may eliminate the possibility of tethering. Also, AFAIK Verizon doesn't allow tethering without an extra fee, and probably wouldn't support it on a dumb phone, even for an extra fee.

The last time I tethered using a dumb phone was on Nextel, with their blazing 19.2Kbps speeds. :)
