Nexus 7 on 4G

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but thought I'd pass this on (sorry if this has been discussed).

I bought a T-Mobile 4G Hotspot device at Walmart ($84). Got it set up, and Nexus 7 connects with no problem. Download speed 7144, upload 1716. What's amazing is my phone is on Sprint, and have tried AT&T, both get zero to 1 bar at my house. This gadget gets 2 bars of 4G! That's not really what I bought it for since I have wifi at home, but it was nice to see.

The main reason I bought this is to get rid of my phone, I seldom use it. I'm happy with GrooveIP on my N7, have wifi at home and work, so this is for "the road" (kept in my car). My phone is currently unlimited on Virgin Mobile $25 plan, but this is $35 for 60 days, 3.5gb data. I doubt I'll come close to that, since I'll only use it while out.

Saving $7.50/mo., getting 10x the speed of my 3G VM, and only need one device. Now I just need to figure out how to toggle between wifi networks without having to sign in each time. App for that?

AFAIK the N7 remembers wifi passwords so if you become disconnected from one network and then end up within range of another network it has "remembered" it should automatically connect. At least this is what has always happened with mine

I'm using the 4g hotspot on my LG Motion; I have unlimited 4g data with my plan. I average about 4 megabits up and down with this setup.

I use Tablet Talk to provide text messaging and call controls from the phone. Keeping a BT headset handy and linked to the phone means I only have to pick up the Motion if my Nexus isn't with me.

Have it worked out. I just wanted to make sure I could control which wifi my N7 logged into. If both home and T-mobile hot spot are strong, it just picks the strongest one. Not really an issue since I'd have the hot spot turned off at home. I was just playing to see how well it worked. I installed "Wifi Manager" so I have a widget with connection, can switch easily if I want.

I must say after a few days now, it's GREAT! GrooveIP works great on wifi and very good on 4G. A little breaking up at the other end, but perfectly usable. Great audio at the N7 end on wifi and 4G. 4 full days and my data use on 4G is only 57mb. Used navigation for about 30 minutes, browsed for about 30 minutes, had it on while driving, about 2 hours. 4 days and "no" battery drain (but I turn it off most of the time).

2 days and my VM account expires, adios!

edit/update: No more phone, no more GrooveIP. I installed Talkatone, and it works better than GrooveIP! No more echo problems. So far call quality has been great. No way I'll use up 3.5gb in 2 months, since I only use the hotspot about 1-2 hours per day while on the road. Best gizmo I've bought in a while other my Nexus 7!
