Help Nexus 7 "Settings" disappeared

kariches

Lurker
After a Nexus 7 upgrade was interrupted, I restarted the tablet and a message said an application has crashed and I reported it (several times). The data shown for the report indicated that it was the Easy Video Player app that crashed - so I "uninstalled" that app. The message no longer appears BUT the icon to reach "Settings" no longer appears on a downswipe, AND the tablet goes to sleep after 8 seconds of inactivity. HELP!!!

You can access Settings from the App drawer. You could try a Factory Data Reset from Settings > Backup & Reset. Do you have a nandroid or Titanium backup? If it was the 4.2 OTA upgrade that was interrupted, you may have to flash back to a factory image to start over.

Thanks for your response. I don't know what backup I have - whatever came with the unit.

Will I lose all my apps if I do a factory reset?

Is there another type of backup so that I won't lose the data if I do a factory reset?

The only real backup that came with the unit is the backup of all your Google data, gmails, gcontacts, etc. Titanium backup is a popular backup program, but needs root to be fully effective.

Don't worry about losing your apps, free or purchased. They are remembered by your google account and will be available to download or will download automatically after signing back into Play. No re-purchasing necessary. There are apps in Play that backup specific things like sms messages and non-google e-mail accounts.

Since you had the OTA interrupted, you could try the factory/data reset first, but I'm thinking you will have to re-flash a factory image and set things up again.

Wow this update sure changes things ... Seems the keyboard is majorly improved! Typed all of this without a single missed keystroke! Outstanding!!! Wooo wooo!!
