Help Nexus 7 will only charge by USB

Panq

Lurker
I went to a different country and borrowed a friend's Samsung phone charger, which worked.

Ever since I got back, I haven't been able to charge my Nexus 7 by plugging it into the wall using its original charger. Up until today that was the only charger I'd ever used, but now it won't work.

However, I tried taking it out of the wall plug part and just using the USB cable in my computer, and it connects fine, shows up as a Nexus 7, and charges just fine.

But no matter what I try, it will not charge when connected to the wall socket.

Any ideas on why that could be? This is a real shame as I assume it's out of warranty now, but I don't really need an upgrade for what I use it for.

I thought maybe the different charge had made something loose, but it can't be that because it will charge by USB with the same cable. Maybe the different charger was providing a different voltage or something?

You need to try a different charger (but with the same USB cable), or alternatively try charging a different device with your N7 charger. Either will show whether the charger has developed a problem, which I suspect it has.

The use of the Samsung charger is a red herring; it would have no effect on the subsequent use of the original charger.

That's weird, Panq...

Like John said, try a few other combinations (I was also gonna suggest a different wall socket and/or verify the socket hasn't somehow gone bad (had it happen to me)).

Since the device does charge, it probably is an issue with the charger.

Let us know!

Damn, a faulty wall socket is such an obvious thing to check first I completely missed it!

It was the first thing I tried. ;) The wall socket is fine.

Damn, you are totally right. I tried it with my phone charger in the wall and it charged fine.

I can't believe I didn't think of this. The fact that it stopped working only after I came back from holiday and used a different charger made me feel sure that was the cause. I guess it was a coincidence and the charger somehow broke during the flight or when it was in my suitcase. Which got me thinking... so I had a look at it. It's one of those chargers where it comes in two parts (the back of the charger slides up and off the plug part), so I gave it a push and it clicked into place. Now it works. :o
