Looking to get a streaming device first choice was Chromecast but it plays audio thru TV speaker and that won't do for me.. I have nice surround sound system. My question is does the nexus player only play thru TV speaker? And am able to use videos I have saved on my phone (nexus 6 ) to view using nexus player?
I am not sure why the Chromecast would only use TV speaker if I where to put Chromecast in a HDMI input on my stereo wouldnt that make it use the surround sound speakers?

the nexus player uses hdmi.

if your surround system had an hdmi input and you should get audio and video through the receiver to the speakers you have setup. it can also come out of the television.

chromecast can also come through your surround system. you have a setting that is not properly adjusted clearly.

i used to have a chromecast when they first launched and i had no issues with audio coming through the system.
