Help Nexus unrecognized USB device

Lurker
I purchased a new Nexus in January and have been using it ever since. This morning I went to connect it to my computer (using the factory USB cable) and it comes up as an unrecognized USB device. I tried two different cables and different computers (all xp) but it still doesn't work. It worked last week. I've installed USB drivers from the net, reset my phone back to factory, rebooted my computer with the phone plugged in, I have windows media player 11. What am I missing? The tech on the phone wants me to send it back in.

Connect the phone via USB and launch windows update (I'm on XP). There will be an optional hardware update. That's what worked for me after every other solution in the forums here failed. I'm sure other folks will chime in with other possible solutions too.

Maybe windows update worked for me only after installing other drivers.

there are at least three different versions to try:
-samsung drivers
-google's driver
-pdanet drivers

I tried all of them, all the drivers I could find, and it only worked after using windows update. Maybe there is a problem with your usb port on the phone... does it charge normally? Maybe try a different cable. Maybe try to toggle debug mode

Here is another thought: try to get ADB working. I got that working before when all other drivers failed... I could still adb into the phone. And if adb works, then you can use DroidExplorer to connect to the phone to transfer files.

When I first connected my phone, it was recognized as a Galaxy device and an MTP device, but windows xp just couldnt install it properly.
