Nexus7/Amazon Prime...Please Help!

Myicha

Newbie
Now I have asked this question in another forum and here in other posts, but didn't get an answer. So I'll try again with new thread...

I want a Nexus 7!!! but the only thing stopping me is not knowing for sure if I''ll be able to gain all features for Prime that Kindle owners' have access to.

In a video done on CNET, I was told that I can download the app (from the market of course) and use prime account. But Lisa from Mobile Tech Review says, "the Nexus7 isn't eligible for the Amazon's free leading library since only Kindle branded devices get that".

I'll be doing a lot of reading, but I also want all of the perks that only a "true" Android device would have. In one post it said that the Nexus have to be rooted to get for Prime users, others say it doesn't. So which one is right? If the N7 have to be rooted then I'll have to look else were.:( I do not want a Kindle, but so far there are two tabs (Samsung tab2 7.0 & 7.7) that's not eligible for the free leading library. Not being able to stream is fine with me, I just want BOOKS!

Thanks for those that can help.

Just checked this out for you..

I've just downloaded some free books from amazon to my N7. Just did a search for free books, first one it found was wuthering heights - clicked, sent it to tablet and lo and behold it appeared in the kindle app. 3,095 books currently free, take a look: Amazon.co.uk: kindle free books: Kindle Store

I can't find anything called the leading library, you do mean the lending library ?

From this page:Amazon.com: Kindle Owners' Lending Library

"How it works

Own a Kindle
Books can only be borrowed and read on Kindle devices (works with all Kindle generations)."

So I would say you can't get to the lending library unless you have a kindle device.

From a web search most reviews/comparisons agree with this, so I think CNet are wrong (no surprise there then...)

I'm a Prime member and gave up my Fire for the N7. Unfortunately, I can't read Prime books on the N7. The option to download them to the N7 isn't there. I can view Prime movies, after installing Flash. I use boat browser to watch them. The Kindle app is good for reading... I just wish it had more features, and such as collections.

Send the developer and email and ask him what their intentions will be on developing the app further.

Yes. I haven't even notice that it said lending:o. I think I should pay more attention to what I'm reading huh? lol

Thanks for your help. I really wanted the N7:( now I have no choice but to get a kindle.

I think I'm going to get both . I need the Kindle HD but I want the N7. Especially after looking at all of the home screens that every posted in the other thread.

As an Amazon prime member you cannot use the lending library on ANY device except a kindle. This is the only reason I don't join Prime other than not wanting a Kindle.

Make sure the Fire can access Prime books before you get both. With my original Fire, and I can't access them, and so unless they've changed things, and I doubt if the Fire HD can access them either.

I had one person tell me I could use it on the Android system but they did not know what the Nexus 7 was. Another person told me I could use it but the videos sometimes lag when downloading.

I was going to post something about the books as well but saw this thread. I know there are a couple of apps for SWF files and I was able to watch a video while on the phone with the guy.

If the corporations would just all get along, they would still be able to sell their products.

Funny, I think Prime is worth it to me just for the streaming... the free 2 day shipping is icing on the cake. I think Prime is a better deal than Netflix (although interface is 10x worse). Lots more TV shows that I like (especially old PBS stuff). Use it with the Viera Connect. Works on N7, but not so good. I don't buy books, have a few free ones from Play store, and on Kindle app.

Really! I just read that the lending library is for kindle owners. You may have gotten a lemon. Did you contact Amazon about the problem?

I think it's misleading for them to say "Kindle" owners if all kindles can't access the library. And if that is the case then Amazon should list the Kindle devices that does.

All of them should seeing as how the devices are Amazon devices.

I was thinking the same thing about the shipping. I love reading books so getting prime would be the best move for me.

As for streaming, I'm debating if I should keep Netflix or not. My son is forever on Netflix watching Dino Squad and Godzilla. If prime have that on there then I'll cancel my account with Netflix.

The Fire (at least my original Fire) has the Android app, not the full "Kindle experience". You can't categorize books, and earlier I could not borrow a Prime book. This morning, after seeing this link Prime Books on Fire I decided to try again. It worked. It's been awhile since I tried on the Fire, but I know that the original did not allow you to do that at first (on a Kindle Board others said the same thing when we got our Fires).

Books can, as far as I know, only be borrowed from a Kindle device. However, once it has been borrowed, you can use the Manage Your Kindle page on Amazon to send the book to any device you have. That doesn't help anyone without a Kindle, but if you have both devices, there is a way to get the book on a Nexus 7.

I find that choice of using Kindle app, Nook app, and google play books on full Android Tablet far outweighs any advantage conferred by Prime lending library. I'm not locked in to the device manufacturer's exclusive stream.

We have 3 original Fire's in my household, and they all can borrow books from the Lending Library just fine. It's not limited to regular Kindle devices. If yours can't, I'd contact Amazon and get them to fix it. Maybe just something flagged wrong on your account.

Agree. I'm a Prime member and not being able to use the lending library doesn't even register on my radar. For the most part, the lending library books aren't great. Also, you can only borrow one book a month.

About the only thing I miss about the Fire that I don't have with my Nexus 7/kindle app is image view for magazines. You only have article view on the kindle app. nook app and google play does image view.

Does the N7 have to be rooted? I'm too scared to root any of my devices. I'm not as tech savvy and may completely ruin it.

Not based on his info.

Although, regarding rooting... On Nexus devices its usually as simple installing software on a computer. It is easily undone also.
