NFC and a settings question

What can we do with the NFC application. I tried a picture last night with my wife's M but nothing happened. My son says he does it with his S3. Is this an Android function or a Manufactures/Carrier function?

Also in Setting>data usage>more there is a setting for WIFI direct. What is that? I cannot find any write-ups on it.

Thanks

Jack

Ps: Sorry if a double post. Thought I posted it but couldn't see it.

According to Motorola's website, Android beam ("NFC") for pictures and videos will come with JB (sometime before the end of the year).

I tried with my mom's S3 last night and the only thing that beamed was contacts. So either it was her S-shit apps, or it depends on upgrades for either or both of devices to JB.

If I'm correct, I believe the Samsung galaxy line of devices...that being the S3 and GNote 2 and newer Galaxy line of devices are the only devices that beam pics, playlists etc. However, it can only be beamed between two or more newer Samsung Galaxy devices. It cannot be done with GS3 and a Droid Razr Maxx for example. It can't even be done between a GS3 and a Skyrocket. Which I found out first hand :(

The only thing you can beam at the current time is between any devices is contacts and youtube videos. It may be some more things too, but those two sticks out to me .

I tried to beam a picture between my Evo 4g lte and my friends S3 last night. Upon touching it gave me the offer to beam but instead of the picture it tried to beam my gallery app (Quick Pics). When he tried to do the same thing from his S3 the phone didn't recognize the Evo and nothing happened

at O'Hare airport there are giant billboards with an offer to "NFC" transfer an e book from the Samsung GN in the ad to your GN--just touch. I touched my RMaxxHD to it, but it recognized that it wasn't the right phone. Kind of a crazy feature if it's only gonna work between same brand phones. Not really an "open" feature. Hope that's not the case in the future.
