NFC questions.

I basically understand the whole NFC thing bit I'm not sure if I need an app running in order to use it. I've shared photos between nexii (?) but couldn't do the same to a One X.
Something else I'd like advice on is just how far it goes. I have a Nexus 7 on the way (eventually) and wondered about what I can ask them to do to each other. Could I tap them together and have the phone turn on tethering and the tablet turn on WiFi at the same time?

I have trouble transferring pictures to non jelly bean devices. On ICS devices you can pass web page URLs but not photos. I have a Nexus 7 and a galaxy nexus. Prior to JB, I could not transfer a photo between them. After updating the GN to JB I was able to.

For what you want to do I am sure is possible but would probably require some kind of custom app. You could for example use NFC tags where one would turn on tethering of the phone and another tag could turn on wifi of the tablet.

Personally, I keep wifi on 24/7 on my N7. Doesn't seem to drain my battery much when its inactive. so whenever I tether on my phone, 5 seconds later my tablet is tethered.

But going back to your question, what I notice is that if you are transferring something from an app on the phone it will try to use the same app on the other device. For example, I use picView to look at a photo. when I tap my tablet which didn't have picview yet, I got an error. But after installing picview on my tablet it was able to transfer the file.

Thanks very much.
I guess I'll have to play around when my Nexus 4 (not 7, I'm posting from that). I guess I'm trying to ask if each device will trigger an action on the other at the same time when tapped together. From your answer I guess not. Thanks for the answer.

I've never been able to use NFC with my N7 and SGN, but I figured maybe it was because I have a case on both of them. (both are enabled.) My understanding is touching the top/backs of both of them works the best.
