NFL Draft

The draft is tonight fellas. Who do you want your team to pick?

For the Texans - I hope we trade up for Von Miller, but I doubt it's plausible. Although I could see us trading up to #5 with the Cardinals for #11 and a 1st rd pick next year to select Patrick Peterson. We need either CB or a rushing OLB for the new 3-4 defense.

Other players I wouldn't mind drafting in the first

Prince Amukamara CB
Aldon Smith DE
Robert Quinn DE

Or maybe trading back for Akeem Ayers or JJ Watts? I wouldn't be too much of a fan of this. I think we need impact players immediately.

I have no idea what this temp removal of the lockout means. Can teams trade players now or still restricted to picks? I hope bears trade out of 1st if we can get players for it.. otherwise after the first 15ish this is a pretty weak class?

It's just coaches can meet with players and they can start offseason camps. They can't trade any players that were on the roster, they can't sign anyone either. I think it was just a means to get coaches to be able to settle in with the draft picks.

But as a Denver fan I'm glad we addressed our defensive needs. I was furious when I heard on the news last week that Denver was meeting with Blaine Gabbert. I would've been fine with Marcell Dareus, Patrick Peterson, or Von Miller. We got Von Miller and Boomer made a good point that Denver probably skipped over Dareus because the DT position has tons of prospects this year. We'll probably grab one in the second or third round. I'm happy with the pick.

The Lions made a great choice IMO. Nick Fairley is pretty ridiculous. Even before this draft, their front four was really solid and getting really scary. But now with Fairley teamed up with Suh, wow. Once that front four develops, it's going to be a nightmare.

And I hope Cam Newton is a bigger bust than Jimmy Clausen and JaMarcus Russell combined. I hate that guy. I'll also laugh at Carolina for busting on QBs two drafts in a row.

My Chargers picked up a new Defensive Tackle, Corey Liuget. Very happy about their choice, it fills in their weak spots from last season (run defence & QB pressure). Good pick for being 18th down the list.

I'm not really feeling the JJ Watts pick. I think he's a solid player but the Texans had Amukamara, Nick Fairley and Robert Quinn still on the board at positions of need. If Watts was your man all along, why not trade back and at least acquire extra picks in the process? I blame this on the lockout since now teams have too much time to nitpick the draft and start over thinking it. Sometimes you just need to make the obvious pick, stop acting like you know more than the other 31 teams in the league.

So far my winners of round 1

Saints - Maybe had the best draft so far. They get Cam Jordan who should fit well into a rotational role on the Saints DL from day 1. Also Mark Ingram was the best RB in this class, they gave up a 1st next year but if everything pans out, it'll be late 1st rounder which won't hurt much.

Lions - Nick Fairley drops right in there lap and whatever question marks you had about his work ethic, he'll be playing alongside another young beast in Ndamkong Suh (spelling). Fairley will get a lot of looks at the QB with Suh taking up double teams. This is the best fit for Fairley and the Lions might have the best DT combo in the league.

Browns - An extra 2nd and 4th this year and a 1st and 4th next year. They absolutely raped Atlanta in that trade and still made out with a solid DT late in the 1st in Phil Taylor. This guy is a hoss and will definitely eat up more than 1 blocker on the interior. Now they can still address pass rusher with the extra picks they acquired.

Losers in the draft ....

Falcons - I understand need for another play-maker (even though a number 2 WR is not going to make or break you) but they mortgaged the house to get Julio Jones which rumor has wasn't even the WR they were really targeting. Somehow they thought they were getting AJ Green until Cincy upstaged them @ pick #4. Not only a reach but a reach that comes with wasted picks.

Vikings - Chris Ponder? really? I know there was a run on QBs, but c'mon, Mallett and Dalton were both available and ready for the taking. I could be wrong but Ponder IMO is not a franchise QB and even if he was your guy you could have waited till the 2nd round to nab him. Looks like a big reach.

Patriots - Solder is a project tackle who may never amount to anything. With Vollmer more than capable of sliding to LT, they would have been far better suited to do one of two things, either draft Cam Jordan to sure up the DL or create a monster secondary with Amakumara ... even Costanzo would have been more NFL ready.

Lets see what happens in rd 2. hopefully Da'Quan Bowers stops sliding. For the Texans I would love it if Aaron Williams DB (Texas) or Brandon Harris DB (Miaimi) is still on the board when we pick at #42.

I was surprised when the Saints jumped back into the first round but when they were back on the board there was no doubt they were taking Ingram. I'm very happy with the first round picks. What makes it better is the Falcons made their own version of the Saints' Ricky Williams trade. Julio is a good WR but he's not great and he's certainly not worth what the gave up. Some could argue that the Saints gave up a little to much for Ingram. That may be true but he'll get more touches than Julio and he'll have more of a chance to make an impact.

It'll be interesting how the Ingram draft affects the Saints. Reggie Bush was already having troubles trying to sign on a contract, and on his Twitter after the draft pick it sounds like he wants out. While it may not be the explosive Bush/Ingram punch, they still have solid backs Ingram will compliment.

Reggie will go, his salary is to high for his production(or lack thereof) not to mention we have Ivory and Thomas who we just sighned a 4 year deal.

The saints backfield is going to be beast mode, that and with Brees and our recivers, watch out for another superbowl run. :D

Woot woot I'm loving day 2 for the Texans. I couldn't have wished for anything better. They get 2 guys with first round talent who fits a need and can become impact players from day 1.

Brooks Reed is another high motor Brian Cushing clone and Brandon Harris is going to give us a legitimate playmaker @ nickel back so we can now move Glover Quinn to free safety.

Our defense is going to be so versatile it ain't funny. Now If we can somehow convince Nnamdi Asomugha to come to Houston .... CHAMPIONSHIP

Denver was in position to grab both Stephen Paea and DaQuan Bowers if we wanted, we were interested in both but passed on both. However I can see the rational behind it though. The front seven would be so young if we added two more rookies to it. Also our secondary is way old and will all retire soon, and we'll need to get some guys in there soon which is good with Rahim Moore, especially since he'll be learning from Dawkins. Also Orlando Franklin will be good to help protect the QB, whoever it be...hopefully Tebow and not the scrub Orton.

My only concern is how well will Von Miller fit in a 4-3 defense? He's so explosive and would flourish coming off the edge in a 3-4. If you look around the league the 4-3 hasn't been that conducive to great outside rushing linebacker play

I'm actually curious to see how he'll fit in as well. The brightside of things is Dumerville will be back this season to draw a lot of the blocking attention, which will hopefully free up Miller. At this point, Denver has been last or near last in D so many years in a row...there's only room for improvement. We'll see, and I'll just keep hoping for the best.

Lots of people down here were hoping that the Dolphins would get Mallett. We passed on him...twice. Then he was picked up by the Pats of all people...

I was disappointed/upset but after having some time to cool down, I can't complain. We addressed several needs.

My observations on our first two picks after watching some highlights on YouTube:

Mike Pouncey - Best interior lineman in the draft. We picked him too high IMO but he was the man they wanted and they got him. Addresses huge need on our O-line. Shows great quickness for his position. My concern is seems like he gets pushed around a bit with guys heavier than him. Should be a solid player though.

Daniel Thomas - Wanted to take Mallett here but this front office has not given up on Henne just yet. With Ronnie unsigned and Ricky gone, this was huge as Sparano loves to build offense around the run. He has the size for a runningback. Has outstanding lateral agility for a guy his size and has good burst between tackles and through the hole. I have three concerns. First is that he runs upright but he can be coached to lower his shoulders. Second is speed. Good quickness but doesn't have a second gear. And third is for a guy his size, you would think he would run people over but he doesn't. Overall promising and very productive at Kansas State. Only played two years at the position so he has lots of room to get better.

Edmond Gates is another very good pick. Speed guy to stretch the field, the football field is his track meet. Charles Clay is an H-back/TE that gives us the versatility on offense that we needed.

I'd give this draft a B (If you would've asked me on draft night, I would've probably said a C or C-). I still wish we picked up Mallett :(
