NHL Gamecenter

The Friendly Undead
I just found this app in the market today. Here is the explanation from the NHL site:

WHAT IS THE NHL GAMECENTER APPLICATION?

Stay connected to all the NHL action leading up to the Stanley Cup Final with the NHL’s new NHL GAMECENTER 2010 hockey application. This application keeps fans closer to the ice with an all-inclusive bundle of media features accessible right to your Android. NHL GAMECENTER 2010 is available in three versions: NHL GAMECENTER 2010 (FREE), NHL GAMECENTER 2010 Premium, and NHL GAMECENTER 2010 Live.

NHL GAMECENTER 2010 (FREE) for the Android includes:
- LIVE Scores
- LIVE In-Game Stats for every team and player
- LIVE Ice Tracker to show locations of goals, hits & saves on a virtual hockey rink
- Game Photos
- Full Season Schedule

- Player Profiles with headshots, bios, and stats (current season & career) for all active NHL players
- Archives with results & stats for any day in the current season

If you upgrade to NHL GAMECENTER 2010 Live, you also get:

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM DEVICE REQUIREMENTS
NHL GAMECENTER 2010 has been tested on the following devices:
- HTC EVO
- HTC Incredible
- Motorola Droid
- Motorola Droid 2
- Motorola Droid X
- Motorola Cliq XT

HOW MUCH IS IT?
NHL GAMECENTER 2010 is free to Verizon Wireless customers for the 2010 season including the complete post season and Stanley Cup finals. NHL GAMECENTER Premium is $19.99 and NHL GAMECENTER Live is $79.95.

HOW DO I GET IT?
NHL GAMECENTER 2010, NHL GAMECENTER 2010 Premium, and NHL GAMECENTER Live are available on the Android Market.

HOW DO I SEE GAME VIDEO AND LISTEN TO LIVE GAME RADIO?
Using NHL GAMECENTER 2010 Premium or NHL GAMECENTER 2010 Live choose any current or previously played game and select "Watch" from the game center screen to view the game highlight of your choice. To listen to LIVE game radio, select "Listen" from the game center of any game being played real-time.

WHY ARE MY VIDEOS TAKING SO LONG TO START AND/OR VERY CHOPPY?
This is most likely due to low internet bandwidth. Make sure you have internet connection that can support video streaming. It is recommended to use WIFI for best results.

WHY IS MY BATTERY LOSING IT'S LIFE SO FAST DURING LIVE GAMES?
During live games, the application periodically polls the server to get the latest scores. The default setting is to poll for every 15 seconds. You can extend battery life by changing the poll to a less frequent time (up to 5 minutes) by going to the "Settings" tab, and changing the value for "Update Frequency."

It doesn't list my Samsung Fascinate as a supported devise, but it is in the market and I have the premium version running on my phone.

MLB was only $14.99 and provided the same services. NHL needs to recognize its place in the sports hierarchy and lower that.

Had this on the blackberry and it was a pretty good app (premium version). I'd really like to try the LIVE version, but for $80?? Forget about it.

I am glad to see the NHL finally put out an app but with my work the way it is I couldn't get center ice this year to watch my Canes and I cant spend 80 bucks to watch it on my phone either but I'm glad we still have an app so when things get better I have an option.

I'm not on verizon, can someone supply the apk? I'm already a center ice subscriber. I've got a Nexus One.

It is odd they tested it on a CLIQ, which is a T-mobile phone, but they don't offer it to the rest of us? Weird!

Someone pointed me in the direction of Market Access. Lets you change your carrier ID so that you can see other apps. Download it, then change ID to 310004. Open market, and it will show up.

Requires a rooted phone..

EDIT:

The Market Access way works very well. I'm very conflicted though. I already pay for game center and to use this i'd have to pay an additional 80 dollars? Pretty lame. It should be provided free for subscribers.. This makes me want to just pirate the damned thing.

On the live version test so far, I'm not able to play any highlights or anything.. says video can not be played.. not sure if it is my Work Wifi network or if they have some tie to the verizon network preventing it from working elsewhere... or if it only works on current season stuff, since all the highlights are post-season/last season things. We'll see if the coming days i suppose after some viewable games play, since the current live game is blacked up.

Damn,

I'm in UK and I want this app so bad.

What's the point of having it limited to one carrier only and just USA/NA

Stupid NHL. Especially when they are trying to sell the game in Europe!

Anyone know where to get the APK?

got the premium version for $20. pretty sweet. watch condensed games, game highlights, or individual highlights for any shot, goal, hit, fight..

I agree. The $20 premium app is well worth it. You can see highlights while the game is in progress. So if you want to see how someone scored a goal, you can do that. Now, if they had it where you could buy NHL Gamecenter Live on the PC and get this droid app for free, that would be ultra cool. I would have bought the PC version in a heartbeat. Instead, the $80 app that gives you the live game on your phone is a little tough to swallow. I won't buy that.

Ah well, the Premium is worth it though. Spend the $20, especially if you are a hockey fan.

I'm a huge hockey fan but $80 is ridiculous. The NBA app is $10 and you can watch the games also! Of course you couldn't give me the NBA one for free but the NHL wants more fans so maybe they could make things more affordable.

The NBA does it right.

If you subscribe to the NBA League Pass on TV, they will give you internet streaming for free. I believe the NBA app on the Droid requires a League Pass subscription in order to see all the games for $10.

The NHL is all about grabbing money. If I wanted the entire package, I would need to buy NHL Center Ice for $160, NHL Gamecenter Live for $160, and then $80 for the app for the phone. Thats too pricey for me.

ok, i could have sworn the first time i used this app the videos were clear and smooth. now they are so choppy. i've tried on 3g and 2 different wifi networks, home and work, and it's annoying to watch. the resolution is incredible, but it's a bit choppy, and turning down the video quality doesn't help. i made sure i had as little else running at the same time too.

anyone else having issues with the video being choppy?

No issues with choppiness here, but I have only been using wifi for the video. I will be doing some 3g video highlight streaming tonight.

For anyone wanting to get around a blackout. Install Location spoofer form the market. turn on Mock locations in the development section of your phone's settings. click location spoofer and choose a location that will not be blacked out for the game you want to see. It gives you 1 minute of spoofed location, so as long as you get the game opened in 1 minute you can continue watching it. Verified last night by spoofing i was in canada (Saskatchewan) so that i could watch a game that was playing on Verus and is thus blacked out to all the US. Worked great.
