No audible notification or vibration during call

When i'm on a call and I get a text or an email (that would otherwise make a noise or vibrate) when I am on a call there is nothing. The led light will light up, but that's no use if the phone is pressed against my head. Is there a setting that I'm missing? or that's something a stock N5 can't do?

I'm new here and I hesitate to sound foolish, but at night I turn down the volume to the point where the sound is off and vibrate takes over, then turn it down another notch until vibrate is off and it is completely silent.
Have you, perhaps inadvertently, done the same?

No, it's just during phone calls. the second I end the call notifications will make noise and vibrate to how I set them.

Do you have the Call Waiting box checked off?

yes call waiting box is ticket. I will here a noise for a incoming call while on a call, but not for sms, emails etc
