Help No Backlight, No touchpad..?

Lurker
hey guys!

iv'e had my phone for half a year now, and up until december my phone started showing some wear and tear, the touchpad or analog controls wont respond in games that requires them, and the backlight of the phone starts flickering, wasn't much of a big deal then, but then it got worse, cause now i have NO backlight at all, and if the phone would slide up/down the screen just goes black (the audio still plays though if i slide it while watching a video) and still no analog controls..

this problem has gone from a nuisance to completely useless and frustrating..although i suspect that the problem lies with the FLEX cable, i want to hear the opinions of the xperts, cause in my understanding theres more than just one of the cables that may need replacement, i want to know what exactly does my phone need in parts/repair..thanks!:)

Unfortunately I could not be more specific than you, however I would strongly agree that it is the flex cable that is the primary cause of this problem. In which case I can only advise the handset is sent to an authorised repair agent for assessment.

would you think that this is a common problem with the xperia play?cause i know for one that it is common amongst sliding type phones..im just in doubt of the quality build of SE if these would be a common problem for the xperia play..

and the authorized service centers would be very costly, is there other sources i could rely on for parts?

I can honestly say that this is no something I have seen a lot of with this phone. Regarding it being common for slide phones, this is not quite accurate however the component in question would be taking the most amount of stress given its function so if a piece of hardware was to fail it would likely be this part.

Don't know the thead is still alive.. Anyways..

Man the problem you described was exactly what I have, but,

Let's just say I bought a Xperia Play R800i via ebay, knowing the damn thing would come with situations which the seller said it did (This is true, believe me - think it as you selling me your phone in that state).

Returning.. the issue was the screen, black as you described, just adding a thing, I'm new to SE software, not android and it mentioned "A blackscreen state when returning to standybe screen".

What you think? software problem, obvious!!

Looked for support.. updating roms and not clear how to use the flashtool (just downloaded it:) but.. the damn problem is when it turns on or not and when it happens the same in standby mode..

Now, I have the phone due tree days, me trying to understand with a fellow collegue of mine at work..

I suspect that, there is a updating problem that can "damage" the screen (doubt its my cenario now) and pain in ... to find a way to do a clean install to verify that, thinking: "there is a chance to have to do this blindly? Oh yeah, IT IS A BLACKSCREEN STATE PROBLEM!!)

Anyways, I'm not asking for real help, just ideas but let me tell you this (first poster specially), today I've somehow concluded ( not real sure:( ) that the phone appear to show up the screen after I try to turn it on after i slidded up/down the pad, so my first guess would be the problem, the tning is that in my way, not allways it works..

The phone looks damn awesome, and it's on right now:) but i suspect that if I slide the platform within "sleep" (the black android suspension screen to be clearer) it won't woke up.. Althoug not permantly.. Yeah, I have to retrieve the battery and so, blah, blah...
What I mean is that the screen its not "dead", and I doubt the Clean install would work, but you're the first Ones mentioning the most similar as my case can be..

Last thoughts, I could sent it to repair, believe me, no prob (not using for instance), but I would like to know what is happening since I would like it reliable

Thks

In your case this could be software or hardware it is hard to tell without some troubleshooting. The first thing to do is run a software update:

Download for PC - Sony Smartphones (UK)

Install and open PC Companion then select Support Zone > Phone Software Update > Start > Repair Phone > Continue > Accept data removal > Next > Wait for prepare > Select Phone > Follow the connectionn steps

if this does not work then it is more likely a hardware problem in which case it would need to go in for repair.

Ei folks, new update on my crazy ebay adventure..

Phone worked since friday up until today (sunday)

Ocasionally, i had the same dicribed problem. No sweat, slided up/down a couple times and the screen woked again and responded.

The thing is, i took it to my old man to try and fix it permantly (phone hardware and electronics wizard, believe me). The old man tried to fix the shape of the metal plate that you see in the back of game control pad.

Now i'm sure it is hardware, since now not even slide trick solves the problem. The phone is on and working but no screen definitly.

Any sugestion? Anyone had to solve similar situation?
Please, i know i'll allways have the repair center solution, but read that i've bougth this thing 3rd hand on ebay besides, do all android fans stick to software?

Like i said earlier i do not ask to give a straight answer, just ideas cause there are almost zero support on this

Thks

As outlined above, it is more likely a hardware issue based on your description, which would involve repair (likely the flex cable to be specific).

It would seem that it is the flex cable.. But how can you be so sure? I didn't open it, nor mess up with the flex cable.. I just tried to force a little bit the little metal bar behind the "game" pad to see if i could do it to make better contact.. didn't even touch any other area besides the mentioned, and now screen won't come "alive"..

The system is working, the screen is also working, but there must be somekind of problem with the metal bar i moved.. Makes me figure that metal bar is not touching where it should therefore not comunicating with system and telling it what's suppost to..

Any ideas with this problem or how should i place the metal plate?

Oh, and "paxchristos" I'll be charging that help on the flashtool later:)
Just want to actually "see" screen before I do...

Thks

Hi, Himura.

I've had my Play for about seven years now, and just now I'm starting to see this problem.
I'm pretty sure it isn't the ribbon (changed it already recently for some other problem); the digitizer too is brand new (this is my third now); and as for software it's not likely since I've been using the same for more than a year now.

Hardware must be. At first this started happening (even before I changed the whole digitizer-and-frame part), I'd apply some pressure on the screen and it would turn on the back light. After I changed the digitizer, the problem persisted, With time the pressure had to be more for the back light to turn on, and now I numb my fingertips applying pressure without success.

It must be hardware but I'm fairly certain it isn't the screen or the main flex.
