No data connection, more bars than county jail !

I have Samsung Galaxy S Relay, running 4.1.2.

Very often I will get a message that there is no data connection when I try to make a call, even when I have more bars than the county jail.

This can happen at any time, but it more often happens when using bluetooth, and out of any wifi range.

Other times it works fine.

It happens most often just when I need to place the call NOW.

How can I stop this?

Welcome to the forums, Roger Davis!
I'm a little confused. You don't need a data connection to make a call, it goes through a cell connection. Is it possible you can't connect to 1X even though you have 3/4G?

I made an error... it doesn't say "data" but another word that I can't remember that tells me that there is no connection to make the call, including cell connection. I'll try to remember or find the specific description, but maybe someone here knows it anyway...

Sometimes when you have no signal on your network (in the UK anyway) it locks onto the strongest carrier nearby for emergency use explaining the full barp

+1

My metro pcs phone gets no service at all at my house, but if I have roaming enabled, I get a full bars connection, then when I attempt to place a call, I get a Verizon wireless error message that my call can not be completed.

1) I bought the phone new
2) It has also been replaced, no improvement
3) The problem didn't happen today, so I'm still waiting to get the exact error phrase.
4) The error comes after I try to call, but just before it should dial.

The Magic words are:
"No network connection. Connect to networks and try again."

I am NOT set up to make calls by wi-fi, selected to use cell connections - cellular preferred.

4 bars were present at the time.

Well Roger if they solve your problem they will solve mine. The folks here are wonderful! I however, am a slow learner. They told me to check with my last service provider(the one I bought the Galaxy Note from and it did not make sense to me. :confused:Seeing the answers to your post though make all the sense in the world. I am going to call att and tell them again to completely unlock my phone and ask if they imei/esn blacklisted my phone by mistake.:) I have a feeling that's what has been the problem all along. I am gleaning from answers. I thank you all at the think tank and send you praise!! :-)

Welllll dang. I spent 2 hours on the phone last night with at&t and he checked my phone and said there was no hold on it from them. He was given my imei and said it was free and clear from their end that I need to go back to t-mo and see if they have all their stuff set right. So back to my op saying I am going in circles. :banghead:
