No Data Plan

I got a brand new MyTouch 3G, and when setting up the phone it asks me to sign in to my Google Acct. However, it won't let sign in because I don't have a data plan on my sim card. Is there any way I can sign in or use the phone without needing a data plan? I also don't need to receive the default instructions for connecting to WiFi because I already know their invalid:
When I click the menu button, the only option that comes up is "wireless settings" and when I click that I see nothing having to do with WiFi.

So far the phone looks like it's useless until I sign in. I can dial emergency numbers, and click the green android to send me to the sign in screen and that's it.

I'm looking to see if there's a way to work around this problem so I won't have to pay my dad an extra $20 for a limited data plan.

Use the Search feature and you'll find lots of info on that subject. A common work-around is to setup a data plan long enough to get the phone signed into your account, etc. and then cancel the data plan. Do search.

The easiest way is to get your hands on a sim card with data just so you can activate the phone. You won't need a data sim after that. Their is a way to do it without one, but its harder... you can find information on that one the Xda website. So if you know someone with a data card, ask them if you can borrow it for two minutes.
