Edit: Umm woops, I guess it made a new thread. I'm not sure how that happened.
I came across this thread and see its not too old that I feel bad for bumping it. I have been using an AT&T version of the Nexus One (they only made the AT&T 3G capable ones for a few months and they're super rare as far as I know). Since I'm on my parents plan and they refuse to renew their contract after 10 years of being contract free, I just bought the Nexus One. I've been nearly 3 years without paying for data. These were made by HTC and not sold by AT&T so they never knew what the IMEI is I guess. To do this I put in a fake APN, then used APNdroid to turn off 3G. I can't get any data whatsoever from AT&T. My wife has an iPhone 3Gs that she used for about a year and a half before they forced her to get a data plan but I figured that was coming sooner or later.
The data plan is a huge waste of money as I literally have wifi covering my entire college campus, my house, my work, my parents house, my in laws house. I don't know where I could go that doesn't have wifi. I can't really use data while I'm driving and I have a magellan GPS so using navigation is useless in the car (it cracks me up to see people trying to hold and look at their phone while making turns and they're paying $25-30 a month for that ability). That means in 3 years I've saved nearly $1,000 and not missed it once!
Anyway, just to let you know, if all the stars line up, it's possible to get away with no data forever probably although at this point I'd like to upgrade my phone and I'm trying to decide if I should get the Nexus 4 and if I'll still be able to not pay for data. I'd like to get a Samsung Galaxy S3 but I'm thinking they'd catch me sooner or later. I do wonder if I get a T-mobile version of the Galaxy S3 if they'd catch it. The problem would be that if they did catch it I'd be stuck with a phone that doesn't get 3G and still paying for it.
