Help No Gmail notification sound

My wife's TF300 is having what we perceive to be an issue. When there isn't a Gmail notification in the status bar, it makes the notification sound when the email comes through. If we do not clear the notification and an email comes through for the same account, it doesn't make the notification sound. The email is in the notification, though. If we clear the notification and an email comes through, it makes the sound.

Any idea why this might be happening? What do we need to do to make sure the sound occurs every time, regardless of whether or not the notification has been cleared?

I swear, another guy was just complaining that there WAS a sound and how he wanted to turn it off.
