Help No Green Android on PC connection

Can anyone please help! Got a Galaxy Ace and have only been able to connect ONCE to Kies. Each time I plug in the USB, I tick for tethering, I also untick USB debugging - but nothing happens. Kies just spins for connection... and nothing happens on the phone. I do not see a green android (which having looked for support through various internet searches) which should offer me USB connection or mass storage transfer. Is this a problem with my phone, or with the USB cable, or with Kies?
Computer runs on XP. I'm an not very technical - but any advice gratefully recieved! Phone will be heading to ebay very shortly if not resolved.

Getting Kies to recognise my Ace took several attempts at installing, uninstalling, rebooting, trying again, until it worked. Trouble is, I don't know if this means it will always work or will decide not not recognise the phone again.

I had similar problems with an earlier Samsung phone and PC Studio 3. I think it's a matter of getting the proper drivers installed, and it seems not to always do it right.
