No internet while on the go...how to fix this?

hi everyone, im having a problem with my samsung galaxy s2, while out and about i cant access my apps or the internet, however when i am at home this works fine, what could the problem be?
thanks

I have data activated (only get this info through the on/off key, not on the pull down). It connects happily and superfast to any wireless network in range, but doesn't want to play ball with the cell network.

(It works fine as a phone and txts, just not with the internet related stuff).

I think I've jumped through all the right hoops with my cell provider (Vodafone IT) - so now I'm wondering if I'm expecting too much of it - or indeed if I should turn off the wifi (from the pull down is easy) which maybe will force it to use the cell network? (I'm struggling to test this because my cell signal most of the time is really poor).

Also, it leaps into GPS life (for maps) when it's near the wifi source, but struggles like mad out in the open. As you can tell, I'm very much a newbie to smartphones - I thought the GPS stuff was more 'standalone' and didn't need any 'network' - can anyone explain or point me to a thread where this has been gone through?

OK im new to this soo idk which forum to go to so i hope this was tha right place.. okk I had got the galaxy S from a friend of mine and i jus stuck mi sims card in it and have been useing it.. and recently a message on the bottom of tha screen has popped up and now stays on tha screen.. it says "Currently unable to download. Do you have a "Data Package" with/from your cell company?

You haveto SWITCH OFF wifi if u want to use mobile network! Assuming u have everything configured properly that should be the case... If wifi is turned on mobile internet wont work. Try it and get back here with results ;)

Unfortunately turning off the wi-fi doesn't make it hook up to the cell service. It just gives me an instant 'service not available' message - so I'd better look into some other configuration stuff, or get back to Vodafone on it.

Trying to e-mail from the phone (on cell) results in unable to connect to server message.

you probably need to turn off wifi (which works when you're at home) and turn on data when you leave your house so you can get internet.

do you have a data plan? if not, then you won't be able to connect to the internet outside of your house.

I have wifi off, I have all configuration data correct (well - there is a small doubt here, but I don't expect anyone else here is on the Vodafone Italian network).

Vodafone IT don't have anything on their site for the S2, and they have a couple of caveats about the settings for the S1: (they sent me S1 settings, so that's why I'm slightly wondering about one of the settings).

I've rung them up, but I can't get a real person. I've set up a short term 'smart phone' account which says I can do all the stuff I expect to be able to do on the cell network - it's told me it's been implemented - but still no change and it just refuses to work. AAArgh

You mentioned u have very poor signal recpetion so i think it also might be the case... When you look on signal strenght on main screen do you see small R next to it? If yes it means u are able to have only GPRS or even slower connection and actually u have to allow ur phone to connect to it cause its disabled in default settings. it`s somewhere in options. unfortunatley i`m bit busy atm and dont have my phone with me but i will get back to you later and tell u where exactly to look for it.

Thanks for everyone's ideas - it turned out that there remained one hoop to jump through with Vodafone - now it all works. Pretty dim of them to sms me with 'data enabled', then six hours later another sms saying 'we really mean it now'.

It says 3g next to the signal bars, and it's reasonably fast, say 15 secs to load twitter feeds compared with maybe 6 secs on the wifi.
