Help No message notification with screen unlocked.

I am having an issue with recieving notification on text messages. Verizon phone, just updated to lollipop and now, with the screen still on, it doesn't play a sound which may be simple, but is frustrating the ever-living hell out of me. On lock screen it works fine. I've looked everywhere here for an answer, including the priority options crap, which doesn't seem to work. It's a reletively small issue I guess, but it's driving me nuts. I don't send a text and stare directly at the screen waiting for a response. I'd like to be able to set the damn phone down and have it do its job by using a notification sound like it did before. Thanks in advance!

Mine used to work as it should...........
but of late, I have also noticed that if the screen is unlocked, it will only vibrate, not make sounds "while reading text messages".
FWIW, I have always had Vibrate turned on for SMS, and I have it set for 10 reminders at 2 minutes apart.

I just did a special test to verify what you are saying.
I brought up CoPilot USA mapping program just so the screen would stay lit up.

I then sent myself a text from
http://www.onlinetextmessage.com/verizon-text-message.php
and I heard the special tone assigned to that SMS incoming number both thru my Bluetooth headset, and ALSO thru the S5's speaker.
