Unlimited plans are a gimick meant to con consumers into higher priced plans.

Who is on the phone an unlimited number of minutes? No one. Gimick.

You already have unlimited mobile to mobile, nights, weekends.

Smartphones, most of the usage is data or texting (at exorbitant rates. Use AIM instead = free).

Basically no one should need "unlimited" minutes. For most smart phone users, a minimal talk plan with unlimited data would be plenty. Instant messaging clients can be used as a replacement for texting. VOIP clients exist and work surprisingly well even on 3G networks so you could even talk unlimited with only a data plan.

But the phone companies don't want that. Forget the $30 low end talk plan. Instead you need the $50 "unlimited" plan. +30 for data in each case.

You may not need unlimited minutes, but working for Verizon, I see people come in everyday that NEED the unlimited plan. You may only use your phone for web and texting but a lot of people use their phones for their jobs. Be it running a small business, or just having a job that requires them to be on the phone. Some people just talk on the phone A LOT!!! I sold a vortex to a guy the other day that wanted his wife to be able to check her email, their bank account and facebook. She had an elderly mother that called her every morning and they spoke for two hours every morning. The mother refuses to use a cell phone and calls from a landline. He uses his phone to run his small business. He has a D2 global. Overall they used 4000 minutes a month. I see situations like this everyday.
