No more early upgrades from VZW

I went and upgraded to the Incredible today(BOGO). The guy told me they are doing away with early upgrades. I would upgrade my phone once a year instead of the new every two thing. He said customers will have to wait the full 20 months now. Don't know when this will be implemented but he said soon. Also if anyone is interested the deal they have right now for the add a family share line for free ends on the 31st of this month

Were you allowed to do this annual upgrade because you are primary on a family plan? I was wondering if they would eliminate that along with the NE2. That sucks big time. Did he say if we get one more annual upgrade like they are doing for NE2??

You get one more, as it's part of your existing contract. It just will not be written into new contracts.

Looks like 1 yr contracts will become a must for me. I can't necessarily live with the same phone for 2 yrs. Too much chance of a phone failure between year 1 and 2 also. Used to be able to bail in those instances by using the primary upgrade.

I can see this being a good thing for the phone insurance business and the service provider. Basically everyone except the customer.

Might be time to look at hacking my phone of choice for alternative networks. Always thought this wasn't worth it but it may now be.

So will phones cost more now then?

Not at all. All this means is that people who are signing a contract with Verizon are getting the same upgrade options offered by other carriers. They are no longer giving us any perks over other carriers, other than the option to pay $70 more and get a 12-month contract rather than a 24-month. Thankfully, that's not gone yet.

I think if you are eligible for an early upgrade right now on a primary then they will honor that. But after that, you are back to two years. Well 20 months, not necessarily 2 years. He didn't give specifics but he said it would be happening soon. I'm glad I decided to upgrade. I will be stuck with the Inc now for at least 20 months, which I have no problem with it is a great phone

So I'm thinking this doesn't really effect me right now then, since I got the Dinc when it first came out last April. Website says im eligible again on Jan 4. 2012

If you have a plan of $79 a month or better then you are eligable for an upgrade every 1 year. So you'd be able to get another phone in April. Unless they change things before then

Thanks in advance for the help....guess im a little confused still haha

Maybe this will help...

My best advice would be to wait for as long as you can. At that time, Verizon should have 4G covering most everyone. Also, Tegra 3 is expected to be announced at MWC next month. Which means, that by the time our contract is up in Spring 2012, we could be seeing the release of quad-core phones. I think that it will be worth the wait.

This is the way it works. If u pay your bill online, haven't had your phone disconnected in 3 months and have at least a 79.99 plan u can do an early upgrade every 1 year. When u do this u can take advantage of whatever promotion they have at the time or a phone for whatever the 2yr contract price is. I've done this about 3 times.

That early upgrade option is discontinued effective January 16th. Existing contracts will get one more early upgrade.

So at some point we have to keep a phone for 20 months- as yearly contracts are not allowed on early upgrades.

any contract signed form jan 16th on does not get annual upgrades or new every two. so either sign a 1 year contract if 10 months between upgrades is important or be prepared to only get a subsidy on a phone every 20 months

You are able to pay the difference and have it changed after the fact.
