No new email notifications on Android Wear device

I have a new Galaxy Watch4 and I can't get it to send me new email notifications. I can get SMS notifications, but not email. I believe I have all the permissions set correctly. How can I diagnose the problem?

is the watch up to date? what about the wear app?

Make sure that notifications for your email app are enabled in the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone. Watch settings > Notifications.
