No night clock mode?

The missus has just upgraded her Nexus One to a Galaxy S3.
Mostly loving the phone but does have one issue:

At night, she would plug it into the charger and put the clock on. After a few minutes this would go into a kind of sleep mode with green clock moving around the screen.
My Galaxy Ace also does the same thing.

Is there such a thing on the S3?

There is a desktop clock mode. Go into the clock widget. Scroll all the way to the right and the tab is there.. Press the full screen button that appears and voila. Soem shortcuts also appear and the weather. Press menu for more customisation

Will the screen turn off when running though? The great thing about the old one is that it's always there at a glance and without being blinded by turning the super bright screen on in the early hours

There is automatic brightness options so I am not sure if it will be too dark or bright. Doesn't seem to have a dim time option like some other phones and the screen unfortunately does go off but when you press the home button or power button it goes back to the desktop clock instead of the swipe to unlock screen.

Edit: There is a dock option which i think may achieve this although you have to buy a dock
