There is a notification on the lock screen that says Storage space is running out Some system functions may not work. How do I get rid of it?

The easiest answer is...Delete some apps or data off of your phone.

^^^^ gave the answer, I just like to joke around a bit.
if you have a SD card, make sure all pictures are stored there.
if not, then delete the old pictures after you save them elsewhere.
Use Helium to backup everything you have onto Google Drive, and then just get rid of all the apps you won't use everyday. Not likely you store enough DATA to make much of a difference.
Videos are the worst thing there is for wasting storage space, get them all off the phone.

For information; a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago had this with a Samsung Galaxy Note4 16GB. Even though there wasn't many apps installed and all music, photos and videos were already on the micro-SD. It was the WeChat cache, that had grown to just over 8GB, it had hundreds of unread subscribed magazine posts stored. Normally if you read the magazine stuff, read articles are deleted automatically.
