No Push Email - possible fixes

I have been having a problem with push mail not working on the Razr. I set up a Google Apps email account, under "Accounts", "Email Accounts", "Other". Obviously I set the account to push, instead of fetch. Nothing.

Mail would not get pushed, it would come in sporadically, if at all.

I set the account up as IMAP and followed Google's settings:
Incoming settings
IMAP server: imap.gmail.com
Port: 993
Security type: SSL (always)
Outgoing settings
SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465
Security type: SSL (always)

Well in searching for the problem, I came across a lot of other Razr owners on other sites having the same issue. I Found this link from Motorola: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/73082/~/email-troubleshooting-%28no-email%29-%28droid-razr%29

I tried the first option, "if using secure connection, un check secure connection". Sure enough that did it! Even though Google says it should have SSL always, turning it off worked. Mail gets pushed to the device instantly, within a second of sending my test messages from my desktop.

I hope this may help anyone else who is having a problem. I'm sure turning off SSL would work for other types of accounts, not just Google.

**************UPDATE***********

After power cycling the phone, the email account threw errors that it couldn't connect to the IMAP server. I then had to enable SSL in the account settings and go through an email check. After the check, of course no push again. So I had to go back into the email settings and un check SSL and it worked again.

I don't now what is going on with this. I just upgraded to the Razr from a Droid Bionic. Used the same email setup on the Bionic and never had to do this. Push just worked from the beginning.

I had a similar problem a while back...if I recall I simply unchecked all data connections and then re-enabled them at that worked...could also try soft reset with power button and voume - pressed at the same time for 15 secs. Never had the problem again so I am guessing that some data piece was corrupted. This problem is well described with gmail and droid phones

Great, thanks. I am giving that a try. I have been running K9 mail now because of this issue. I just like the stock Blur email app better. Hopefully this fix works.

Has this been solved yet? I am new to android and just switched from iphone 4 and so far love it, however I like the stock email app on the razr much better than the gmail app. My gmail syncs to the stock app no problem, but not my google apps email account. I think the 'solved' title should be taken off of this as it doesn't look like it is from reading through the thread.

If anyone has figured this out please post it, for now I will continue to use the inferior gmail app.

Hopefully this helps some people

I currently have my domain email handled via google apps and have been trying to get push mail functionality on my razr... Haven't had a whole lot of luck.

After reading a lot of different threads I found that those who use push mail via MS exchange capable servers seem to have had better luck.

So I did some digging and found a few days ago an option that has worked for me (and a few phone reboots and data connectivity losses).

Apparently we can setup our email accounts under the Razr's stock email application as an Exchange account. I used the directions very similar to the one's below, and I also made sure under my Google App account for my domain that Android Sync was enabled (under Google App Dasboard > Settings (near top) > Mobile (option along left side))

  • In the Email field, enter your full Google Account or Google App email address.
  • Leave the Domain field blank.
  • Enter your full Google Account or Google App email address as the Username.
  • Enter your Google Account password as the Password.
  • When the new Server field appears, enter m.google.com.
  • Leave the Secure Connection option checked

I think this may be the ticket. I set up the account through Corporate Sync on the phone and push looks to be working. I will run this for a few days and see if it continues to work. I remember I had to set up my iPhone with these settings a while back to get true push working with Google Apps.

I think I have a much simpler solution than all the finagling mentioned above:

I just set up my Yahoo account as "other" and the push seems to be working fine on my Razr Maxx.

To put it simply, in the stock messaging app, hit menu, select "manage accounts", then "Add account", then "Email Accounts", then "Other". Enter your email address & password, then select "Next" at the bottom. It added my Yahoo account within a few seconds and the push works fine - I see all my folders now and can do all the transfers/deletes/etc that I could with this app when I had it on my previous phone (Droid X).

Hope this helps!:)
