Help no ringtone for text messages

Sorry if this is a no-brainer..but I just got my LG Optimus T phone and cannot seem to get a notification ring when I get text messages?
I was able to select what ringtone I wanted for voice mail and the actual phone but I see nothing about dealing with messages?
Even under the message icon there is no clue...

Tap the message icon>then the menu key> settings. You should then see a spot to select a ringtone

Used to be just a normal everyday phone user. Then I was introduced to the Microsoft world of mobile phones, which I thought was great. Then I found Android.

I could not figure out how to set my phone to vibrate with text messages! This was a big help! Thank you so much!
