Help No sound during calls (samsung galaxy s3 problem)

What worked for me:
- dial *#0*# to enter hardware tests
- press "receiver", which tests the sound device you use when holding the phone next to your ear. "speaker" is on the back and is way louder, this is not what you want to test
- I could hear a sound, so I exited hardware tests, placed a test call and it worked.

Symptoms before doing this:
- I couldn't hear anything during calls, but my friends could hear me
- speaker was functional
- headset was working too.

Hello! Well like my name suggests, this is my first ever smart phone (older user) and I can't get sound out of the earpiece. The corded headphones work as does the rear speaker but the earpiece sound does not work. At first I thought I was just missing something but it looks like a real problem because I did as this post says

- dial *#0*# to enter hardware tests

I pressed "reciever" and nothing happened. All the other tests work. I got this phone yesterday and it did not work from the get-go. Obviously I will take it back and maybe exchange for a new one?

Wow, is this what non-Apple smartphones are like? I mean, this is a pretty basic function, how can something so basic be wrong. I am not sure if I should cancel my plan altogether and go with an IPhone?

My phone is the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Do you think this is just horrible bad luck or is Samsung really poor quality?

thanx :)

Glad to find this thread - have exactly the same problem and thought I was going mad!

Galaxy S3, Telstra version GT-I9300T but running on Optus, Android Version 4.1.2, intermittently a call in or out will have no speech either way, if you let the call go for more than 20 seconds or so, when hanging up the phone drops into no service.

Backing it up and wiping it now to send back for repair...

Not sure if there is anyone out there, still having this problem, My S3 sound went out completely tonight no speaker phone no unlock sound no phone call sound. seemed like the sound bord was fried. I tried everything several rest removing the battery nothing worked!

Then I tried old trick I remembered from my old days of working and managing att store, which I call shock therapy. try the following steps;

1- You need a rapid charger like a car charger this might work with standard home charger but i did it with car charger.

2- Plug your phone in to the charger while the phone is powered on.

3- Remove the back cover and remove the battery while the phone is still plugged in the charger.

4- Unplug the phone while the battery is removed.

5- Plug the phone back in the charger and now insert the battery, put the cover back on.

6- Turn the phone back on while its still plugged in!

Voila the phone turned back on and this time it played the Samsung welcome melody and everything is working perfectly the sound is complete back on.

This worked for me hope it solves you guys issue in case anyone crosses this again!

It would be good if only ppl with the same problem on the same phone (S3) would post here. This is a serious problem and I have to tell you what happened to me.

I tried all fixes here and elsewhere and also flashed my S3 with custom firmwares and modem files all to no avail. All this flashing voided the warranty of course, so, deciding it must really be a hardware problem, I looked on ebay for an S3 with broken screen so I could get the motherboard from it and use it to fix mine. I did all this and was horrified when I made a call and the trouble was exactly the same. No sound either way, no ringing sound, message: out of service area. From this I decide it has to be hardware problem, not on motherboard but on screen part of the phone.

Then I tried whatever I could to restore original phone to original condition. I managed to reset it using TriangleAway and flashed official system to it. Then I took it to retailer where I bought it and they sent it to Samsung for me. I have maybe 3 weeks to see what happens.

Meanwhile I have this new phone with broken screen that I bought, it is worth nothing as it is. So I look for and find new screen for it on ebay. This arrived yesterday, I installed it carefully, boot up the phone, all is well, call my landline phone and, WTF? Same problem exactly. Now what do I do? The screen came with new shell and back cover as well and the phone looks absolutely brand new. I thought I would have no trouble selling it. But as it is it is just a very expensive MP3 player.

Now, has anybody managed to shed any light on this absurd situation? What I can tell you is that I bought the Samsung because I had an HTC Desire HD, the best you could get at the time, and was quite disappointed in it after awhile. Now I have 2 Samsung flagship phones, and worse trouble than ever. I would have been far better off to buy one of the cheap clone look-alikes. If I don't get to the bottom of this soon, that's exactly what I will do. I paid $750 for that bloody S3 and got nothing for it. I'm angry, you might be able to tell.

I bought the S3 this week, paid price of $439.00 at Straight Talk and I have the same problem. Making a call shows up as dialing, no sound at all, then it ends call. Sometimes says out of area, sometimes no service etc. etc. This phone has a lot of attractive bells and whistles, but if I can't make calls on it, its of no use to me. I'm returning it on Monday.

I'm answering this now because I just encountered the problem over the last several days and found the answer (for my phone, anyway). I realized that when receiving a call, the "headset" icon was lit up. I switched to speaker and I could hear and talk but one app (Uke Tuner) still had no sound. So, I turned off the bluetooth entirely and it worked.
Try turning off your Bluetooth and see if it solves your problem. If it does, let me know.
My phone was picking up a bluetooth signal from a hearing aid device I use and the sound was transferring there.
Hope this helps someone.

Thanks for the response and possible solution ujumpin, but I returned the S3 and bought a Droid Razor M - it worked right out of the box and I think I like it a little better.

If you are experiencing this problem and have the sound about app for headset switching uninstall and see if it corrects the issue. Great app but recent updates may cause the issue. I just wanted to offer my solution for others as a possible fix.

GUYS! You will not belive this! After reading theese forums up and down I got so angry.. I turned my phone around and gave it a real hit right on the speaker while yelling "f*k you phone!".. It now works

Thank me later!

I think that was due to some changes made for Android 4.3 forcing notification in the status bar for any "un-killable" apps. The newest version should work again.

Hi.. I had the same problem..no sound during calls but speaker was working fine

1.When the problem first occured i dialed *#0*# and checked for receiver and it was working and after that the sound was working again on calls

2. After a some time the problem started again, and this time checking on receiver with dialing *#0*# gave no solution. Receiver was not functioning and i thoght it is a hardware issue and send it for repair.

3. After 20-25 days i got back my phone and only thing they did was updating the firm.. And the problem was still there...

4. Now when i dial *#0*# to check for receiver, sometimes it is working and sometimes it is not working... but how could it be possible while testing the hardware that it is sometimes working sometimes not .This drives me crazy...
i assume it is a software related issue because of that and i dont know what to do

Earphones did not make any difference.
What is strange, is that when you let the call stay active for about a 10 sec + +, the antenna signal completely drops when you hang up. Signal do come back after some seconds.
Hi, do you resolve your problem?

Making calls but no sound in or out even tho my phone was showing it was connected and the other phone rang. I went on forums where it was suggested after trying all the obvious that it was a problem with the phone. I was on the verge of returning it when after fiddling i found this instantly worked. On phone....
Settings
Connections
More networks
Mobile networks
Network mode
Change to WCDMA ONLY

Mine was on WCDMA/GSM (AUTO CONNECT) and will not work on this setting.
Still working now. Hope this helps

Hi,
I have the same issue I read in this thread on my S3:
- I can call and receive calls, but no one can hear me and I don't hear anyone
- After the call ends, the network goes down for few seconds

I tried the following solutions (and none worked):
- Wipe everything, factory reset
- Install a new ROM (an official one, 4.3)
- Checked the volume and the accessibility option to mute all the sounds
- Disabled Wifi and BT
- Plugged and unplugged the Headset (before, during and after a call, during and after a wipe)
- Installed Sound-About
- Changed the network mode
- Combination of these solutions in different order :)

Everything started when I installed the Samsung Gear Manager, so I thought was something related to the BT transfer of the calls, but the problem is still there after the wipe, and I'm starting to wonder if the two events were really related from the beginning.
Doesn't seems an hardware issue (the mic, earpiece and speaker work fine with Skype and other software), and I read of a lot of ppl that sent the phone to the assistance and the problem restarted few days after the phone returned.

Now this is my question:
If it's a bug, some kind of software conflict, how is possible that is still there when I wipe the cache, perform a factory reset and install a new ROM? What is that the android device keeps in memory apart from the SDcard data?

Hey ya all,
So after getting the NO Sound thingy though out the system, but this is a "phone" (?) we really need the sound for phone stuff. HUH?
So was running Gummy Rom which is extra super great, but no sound...
so I Tried... Stock detoxed .. No Sound.... Tried Carbon Rom... no sound.... than came here. (Should have came here before all the flashing.) LOL!
Went to duckduckgo search....
Located.... http://www.technobezz.com/fix-samsung-galaxy-s5-audio-problem/
And thanks to Adity Bera
So the problem finally got fixed by...
Turning off phone
Pulling battery
Popping out SD card and popped back in.
Popping out SIM card and popped back in.
Replaced Battery.
Rebooted
GOT SOUND! Hoo Ra!
Hope that might work for the new buyers of an S3 or any other phone.
Thanks for this forum!

omg...i spent days and days scratching my head..i deduced that it had something to do with the audio chip as some others did as well...i dont have micro electronic tools to reball...but..i compared everything on my att s4 to the cricket s4 that didnt have audio during calls...the att one did....so im trying to figure out whats so different...take the mother board out and i cut a piece of my double sided sticky tape small enuff to apply where the audio chip sits...i think 4mm tape...i know its not the lcd screen tape i think thats 2mm...put her back together and now i have sound during calls...i dont know how long its gonna last but that did the trick...of course i didnt peel the protective part of that tape off...so try this and let me know...

My mother had no ringer and mic,no headphones as well as no sounds coming from speaker. After playing with the settings for a while I discovered "turn off all sounds" was selected in "accessibility". After unselecting it the device returned to normal with full functionality.

Some of the issues may be software related but it's worth checking out before contacting service

I have an Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra. The earpiece has stopped functioning. It had stopped functioning before (2 times). Device fixed itself in both times. I don't know why and how it stopped and started functioning. There are only a few apps. Battery is good. Headphone usage is minimal. It is clearly not a hardware issue but I don't know how to fix it. The battery is non-removable so it is not an option. Maybe draining it down to 0% can replace "remove-the-battery" option.

There is 4.2.2. Android OS running on the device.
Rear speaker is okay.
