No text message alert on Samsung J3

I am not getting any alert when I receive a text message. I have checked to make sure that notifications is turned on and tried many differtent tones to no avail. I do not know that I have a text message until I pick up the phone to use for something unrelated and see the message there. Any suggestion?

2. Tap Messages .
3. Tap the Menu icon. ...
4. Tap Settings.
5. Tap Notifications.
6. Tap the On switch to turn on or off .

If that doesn't work, please call your provider.
