no texting key boad when starting a new text

[Android Question]

How come when I go to start a new text my key board wont appear and if I tap in the space to add text it still wont appear.
It will only come up if I insert a smiley???

It works fine when I email though.

Very annoying.

How do you insert a smiley if you don't have a keyboard??

I've never met this, but I'd check the settings in your message app - look for anything that might relate to keyboard preferences. If not, check the keyboard settings (should be able to find them through the main system settings menu under Language and Keyboard).
