No USB port, but can I change ROMS?

Hello,

My HTC Heros USB port was "replaced" and I lost all USB connectivity to my computer, but it still charges. The USB connectivity is gone for good, some very small SMT components were lost in the replacement.

I have an external microSD card reader. Is it possible to get the CyanogenMod Rom to work with my phone now?

Yes, you can just download the zip file to your SD card using the phone's browser. Ideally, you'd want to be connected to wifi when you do this; otherwise its going to take a while.

Also, you might find it easier to send the download link to your phone through email, rather than trying to navigate to it with your phone's browser.

Thank you for that. I managed to get it to stop bootlooping. I need a SMD rework station to replace the microphone and then maybe I can use it as a regular phone again. I managed to permanently root it. Do you have a link to the zip file?

Or you can download the zip to your PC, remove the SD from the hero, install it in the PC (or use a card reader) and copy it that way... Just another option ;)

I assumed you were rooted... I do not know any of the latest root methods with the hero. There used to be an app that would root for you, but I don't know if it still works... I will check around when I get back on a PC.

I am definitely rooted. I used Z4Root and it worked great. SO once I am rooted I can install any ROM I want, just unzip it to the sdcard then?

Moving thread to the root section. Yes, you can install any ROM you want once you are rooted.

Just make sure it is for the Sprint HTC Hero and not the GSM version. That is extremely important to remember. Another quick way to move files back and forth from your computer to your handset would be to use an FTP server which you can find here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.swiftp&hl=en . You would just enable the server on your Sprint HTC Hero, and then connect to it on your computer and, boom, you can copy files to and from your microSD card wirelessly. It works great.

I am sorry. So once I am rooted, all I have to do is unzip the ROM file in the root of the sdcard, boot to restore (Pwr+Home?), it will read the SDcard Rom, install it, and then I am set to go? It's that easy?

No. You need to place the zip file in the root directory, reboot to recovery and then follow the instructions that came with the rom. These are usually the same and entail wiping caches and such, but it is a good idea to follow the specific steps for the rom you are loading.

But do a nandroid backup before you ever flash anything... Just in case something gets borked and you need to recover...
